NEW DELHI — Cyclone Phailin looked as though it would bring catastrophe to the eastern coast of India last week. But while the storm’s 150 mph winds devastated homes and flooded farmland, the decision by Indian authorities to evacuate more than 1 million people has saved countless lives.

The mega-storm, which may be the strongest to strike India in over a decade, slammed into India's eastern coast Saturday with sustained winds of about 124 miles per hour, with gusts reaching 150 mph.
