Japan passes a democracy-muzzling Patriot Act

SEOUL, South Korea — As tensions mount between China and Japan, in a rare late-night parliament vote Friday night, Japan's right-wing government passed a controversial security measure: the Bill on the Protection of State Secrets — essentially Japan’s version of the USA PATRIOT Act. The bill — which criminalizes some forms of investigative journalism and conflates terrorism with ‘imposing one’s opinions’ — was supported by the Obama administration.
