Mexico: Cobalt responders are safe from radiation

MEXICO CITY — Mexican nuclear safety officials spent Thursday carefully repackaging a potentially lethal handful of stolen cobalt-60 from the edge of the small town where it was found after a panicked 60-hour search.

MEXICO CITY — Mexican police Wednesday recovered a potentially lethal load of radioactive cobalt-60 just a few miles from where it had been stolen more than two days earlier. The container holding the cobalt, installed in a medical device used to treat cancer, apparently was opened by the thieves. The cobalt was recovered about a half mile from the truck, officials said.
