Twitter launches in Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew, Urdu

According to Twitter's blog, some 13,000 volunteers helped with the translations, including linguistics specialists, bloggers, students and IT professionals from Saudi Arabia, Israel, Lebanon, Iran and Pakistan, amongst others.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Kenyan military spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir caused a stir when he began tweeting last year about Kenya's invasion of Somalia and the apparent threat of weapons-toting donkeys.

He caused another Twitter storm Wednesday with a series of tweets in which he described the brutal stoning to death of a Kenyan by Somalia's Al Shabaab militants, and posted graphic photos of the incident on Twitpic.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — The news spread like wildfire on Twitter this morning: Nelson Mandela is in hospital.

It was retweeted by journalists and by a major South African newspaper, keen to be first with news about the beloved 93-year-old former president, known to be in frail health.

"Former president Nelson Mandela is in hospital, according to reports. Watch this space for more information," tweeted The Times, a Johannesburg newspaper (@TimesLIVE).

Twitter users, take heed: a California man is being sued for keeping his Twitter followers after leaving his job at a US cell phone news website.

Noah Kravitz (@noahkravitz), a writer who worked at PhoneDog, tweeted for four years as @Phonedog_Noah, amassing 17,000 followers. When he left the company in October 2010, he changed his Twitter name, but kept his followers.
