UN Human Rights Council may act against LGBT discrimination

While supporters celebrated France becoming the 14th country to legislate for marriage equality, across the world lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people continue to struggle against violence and discrimination. Just days before the passage of the historic French law, a gay couple were badly beaten in Paris, just one of many homophobic attacks apparently triggered by the bill.

The reason Margaret Thatcher’s death continues to divide opinions and arouse strong emotional reactions has to do more with the controversial legacy of her policies in the current economic environment, than with her personal history and individual qualities.

Next month in Munich, those associated with a long-unknown neo-Nazi terror cell go on trial for 10 murders allegedly committed over the last several years. The public and media outrage at the state for failing to uncover the group’s existence is another reminder of how sensitive Germany remains to its heinous past, and how serious it still is in confronting it.

As a media organization born in Boston, The Islamic Monthly is shocked at the tragic explosion at the Boston marathon. Our institution has been an appreciative recipient of its tremendous offerings as a city, and earlier Monday we joined our friends and neighbors celebrating Patriots Day and the historic marathon. The tragedy particularly hits home for me; the blasts occurred in the same spot I’ve often cheered many a friend on to the finish line in past marathons.

The OECD claimed today that Britain is back in recession. The Paris-based NGO's figures run at slight variance to those of British-based economic statistics compilers … but not by much. Even if the OECD's figures are slightly off, nearly 18 months of zero growth feels to British consumers and businessmen like a double-dip recession.

The question is: at what point does the Conservative-led coalition own this economy?
