Morocco election surprises

The longer you stay in Morocco, the less you feel like you understand. That’s something I’ve heard a lot from foreign observers who’ve been here longer than I have. It’s a country with many centers of political power, with a fluid political system that awards seats proportionately — virtually ensuring no party wins a majority.

A voice, or just a seat?

RABAT, Morocco — This may well be remembered as the moment when town halls across Morocco saw their occupants begin sporting high heels, handbags or the hijab. Elections for “commune councils,” the bodies that oversee local development, are taking place Friday in cities and villages countrywide — and the 130,000 candidates vying for seats include an unprecedented cohort of women numbering more than 20,000.

RABAT, Morocco — In the lottery of arranged marriage, winners and losers sometimes take years to reveal themselves. But one soft-spoken woman seated in a Casablanca women’s shelter said her fortunes were apparent from the start. Soon after her 2003 wedding, her husband made a regular practice of abusing her, said the woman, 27, who asked for safety reasons to go only by her initials, S.H.

WASHINGTON — For the second time in six months, representatives from the Polisario Front — a North African liberation movement representing the Saharawi people — and the Kingdom of Morocco meet this week in New York to attempt to negotiate a settlement to the 35-year-old conflict over the Western Sahara.

The weavers in this village say it’s hardly worth the effort. “You can’t give a damn about carpets anymore,” said Rakia Nid Lchguer, 57, who, like many weavers in this country’s remote south, spent a decade perfecting her art, beginning at age 6. “The market barely repays the cost of the wool,” she said.

Morocco will remove law that permitted rapists to marry their victims

Morocco is planning to change a controversial law that absolved rapists if they married their victims — a primitive punishment that likely led to the suicide of a 16-year-old girl forced to marry the 23-year-old who raped her in 2012.
