Syria, which has been percolating in and out of public view for the last two years, exploded into full sight this past week as a result of revelations that the Assad government may have used nerve gas against rebel-controlled areas. With over 70,000 already dead -- the result of air strikes, heavy shelling of populated areas, and other deadly conventional military means, one can legitimately wonder why the possible deaths of an additional dozen or two Syrians would cause such concern in Washington.

On Friday April 19, thousands of Bahraini protesters were subdued by state violence when they assembled to demonstrate against the Formula One Grand Prix being held in Manama. Pro-reform protesters from the February 14 Revolution Youth Coalition marched on the capital’s Pearl Roundabout. Clashes broke out when state security forces “fired tear gas and shotguns to disperse the protesters before they neared the area,” reported Al Jazeera English. Demonstrators responded by chucking petrol bombs and stones at police officers, chanting, “Your race is a crime” and “No, no to the blood formula.”

US energy independence has been a pipedream of presidents and politicians. With President Obama’s looming decision on whether to approve the Keystone pipeline, proponents are citing US energy independence, lower fuel prices, and a chance to get oil from a more friendly country as reasons to back the project.
