South Africa builds fitting memorial to Samora Machel

MBUZINI, South Africa — Atop a gently rolling hill near this village in the northeastern part of South Africa lies the site of one of the great tragedies of modern African history. It was here, almost exactly 23 years ago, that Mozambique’s first independent president died less than a mile from his beloved country in a plane crash that has yet to be fully explained.

Opinion: Male circumcision alone won't solve Africa's HIV problem

Editor's note: Africa has the world's largest number of HIV infections and AIDS cases. Across the continent the disease is being battled with public education and antiretroviral drugs. Swaziland's wildlife makes spectacular comeback

MILWANE WILDLIFE SANCTUARY, Swaziland — Lions and elephants used to roam freely across Swaziland, but excessive hunting and habitat lost to agriculture meant that for nearly a half century, the king of the jungle could only be found on the kingdom’s coat of arms. Now, thanks to the efforts of one dedicated family and the personal protection of King Mswati III, wildlife is staging a remarkable comeback in one of southern Africa’s smallest countries.

So the bad news is not so bad: Mandela — the icon of African liberation — will withdraw almost entirely from public life in order to rest and spend time with his family. The announcement by the Nelson Mandela Foundation was made to squelch speculation that Mandela was gravely ill.

Madagascar's lemurs under threat

Lemurs have it tough these days. The political chaos that has engulfed Madagascar this year has spurred a flurry of illegal logging activities inside national parks meant as safe havens for these unique creatures. What is more, loggers hunt the primates for food while they stay for weeks on end in the protected forests, and even sell lemurs as bushmeat to local restaurants (see the grisly photos here.)

Bad timing for a new police policy

Top News: After recently issued crime statistics showed that some violent crimes, including home robberies, actually increased in the previous year, South Africa’s police forces vowed to get tough on criminals. First step: a new crime prevention TV show.

Would you eat this lemur?
