The attack occurred after the man and his wife surprised a female bear and her cubs on the Wapiti Lake trail. The woman wasn't hurt.

According to BBC News:

"In an apparent attempt to defend a perceived threat to her cubs, the bear attacked and fatally wounded the man," said the park in a statement. "Another group of hikers nearby heard the victim's wife crying out for help, and used a cell phone to call 911."

Campsites and hiking trails in the isolated area in the middle of the park where the attack took place were closed, ABC News said. The identities and hometown of the couple aren't being released at present.

Al Nash, a spokesman for the park, said that no grizzly encounters had been reported in the park recently, he Los Angeles Times said. But wildlife specialists in the area believe that shrinking habitat and food sources might result in grizzlies being more likely to attack humans.

Park officials and wildlife specialists were looking into the details of Wednesday's attack, Reuters said. It appeared that the sow, which left the area with her cubs after killing the 57-year-old man, was behaving normally as she defended her cubs against what she perceived as a threat, and so it was likely she wouldn't be killed, said Linda Miller, a spokeswoman for the park. The bear hadn't been located.

environment Travel/Tourism Americas Wildlife News Culture & Lifestyle Weird Wide Web GlobalPost Blogs Thu, 07 Jul 2011 03:54:29 +0000 News Desk 5669665 at http://www.globalpost.com Another earthquake strikes Japan's northeast, and tsunami alerts are issued, then canceled http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/asia-pacific/japan/110710/japan-earthquake-tsunami-warning
Officials said there were no reports of further damage to the Fukushima plant resulting from the earthquake that hit northeastern Japan on Sunday, and though a tsunami alert was issued and residents in coastal areas were urged to evacuate, the alert was canceled later and a wave of only about four inches was recorded in Ofunato.

environment Japan Tsunami Natural Disasters Nuclear Asia-Pacific Japan Sun, 10 Jul 2011 04:23:16 +0000 News Desk 5670075 at http://www.globalpost.com Scorching heat grips half of U.S., with severe drought conditions in parts of the country http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/americas/united-states/110712/scorching-heat-and-drought-hits-us
As a heat wave pounds half the U.S., meteorologists say the problem is a high-pressure pattern that has stayed stuck over much of the middle of the country, blocking an influx of cooler air from the north.

environment Natural Disasters Americas Health United States Wed, 13 Jul 2011 03:08:00 +0000 News Desk 5670316 at http://www.globalpost.com Nigeria's Ogoniland oil region could take 30 years to recover from oil spills, UN says http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/africa/nigeria/110804/nigeria-oil-spills-ogoniland-shell-un-cleanup-30-years
The Niger Delta's mangroves and fish-rich creeks have become one of the most polluted places on Earth

environment Oil Business Nigeria Africa Emerges Thu, 04 Aug 2011 19:26:00 +0000 News Desk 5672389 at http://www.globalpost.com Powerland Issaquah: Sustainable Suburbs http://www.globalpost.com/internal/video/5679140

A Seattle suburb is becoming a model for green design.

Byline:

Tim Matsui

ISSAQUAH, Wash. — At first glance, the neat rows of houses in Issaquah Highlands seem like those in any other suburb.
