It makes the whole story that much more mysterious.

Fortunately, the writers of The Nation from Malawi — ever the intrepid reporters — were equally intrigued about the logistical challenges of filling the needs of sex-starved loggers.

So, they got embedded, so to speak.

After a harrowing investigation deep in the forest, here is what Malawi Today reported: “The Nation had a four-day live-to-tell experience in four Chikangawa timber centres: Luwawa, Nthungwa, Raiply and Kalungulu where, at some points, we saw men on queues, waiting for their turn with a prostitute.”

Specifically, this is how it happened, according to the paper:

“The Nation was in luck on a Saturday evening. After sampling traditional wine at Nkhando, our crew witnessed five men lining up near the market’s makeshift bar for a girl who identified herself as Linda from Jenda Trading Centre,” the paper wrote. “In the discomfort of a little shack, a woman (name withheld) takes up to 25 men in one night: one at a time, with or without a condom while the rest wait on a disciplined queue outside.”

The sexual activities are so prevalent in the region that local grocers apparently fail to meet the demand for condoms, which in turn creates a bigger market for unprotected sex.

Payday at the lumber centers, apparently, creates unprecedented business opportunities for women.

Africa forest loggers Malawi prostitutes sex workers wood Offbeat Wanderlust Tue, 07 Feb 2012 19:11:13 +0000 Iva Roze Skoch 5690520 at Malawi president blames unrest on aid groups and foreign donors
Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika has accused Western donors of supporting and funding a growing opposition movement that is challenging his leadership.

Africa IMF Malawi Tue, 06 Mar 2012 00:52:39 +0000 Alexander Besant 5694732 at Malawi's President Bingu wa Mutharika 'very critical' after heart attack The 78-year-old leader's condition was "very critical," an unnamed minister told Reuters.
Africa Malawi World Leaders Health Thu, 05 Apr 2012 13:32:00 +0000 News Desk 5699304 at Bingu wa Mutharika dead: Malawi president dies after heart attack Mutharika collapsed during a meeting Thursday morning, and was rushed to a hospital in Lilongwe, the capital.
Africa Malawi World Leaders Politics Fri, 06 Apr 2012 07:20:00 +0000 Erin Conway-Smith 5699319 at Malawi confirms death of President Bingu wa Mutharika There has still been no official announcement about Mutharika's successor.
Africa Malawi Politics South Africa Sat, 07 Apr 2012 07:39:00 +0000 Erin Conway-Smith 5699557 at Malawi to overturn homosexual ban Malawi is now the first African country to repeal its ban on homosexual acts since 1994.
Africa Malawi Fri, 18 May 2012 13:33:18 +0000 Luke Browne 5704721 at Malawi quits as African Union summit host over Bashir Bashir is wanted by the ICC for alleged war crimes in the Darfur region of Sudan.
Africa Malawi Omar al-Bashir Sudan Diplomacy Fri, 08 Jun 2012 14:58:00 +0000 News Desk 5707221 at African Union summit to be held in Ethiopia after Malawi refuses to host Bashir Bashir has been indicted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Darfur.
Africa Ethiopia International Criminal Court Malawi Omar al-Bashir Diplomacy Tue, 12 Jun 2012 11:18:00 +0000 News Desk 5707596 at At least 47 dead after boat capsizes on Lake Malawi The boat is believed to have capsized late Monday, but police only became aware of the accident on Tuesday after locals “saw dead bodies floating on the lake and a boat floating upside down.”
Africa Ethiopia Malawi Somalia Thu, 21 Jun 2012 11:04:07 +0000 Luke Browne 5708777 at Bodies of 42 African migrants found by roadside in Tanzania Tanzania’s Deputy Interior Minister Pereira Silima said 127 migrants set off for Malawi from Ethiopia in two trucks, but after reaching the northern Tanzanian town of Arusha were packed into one container truck.
Africa Ethiopia Malawi Somalia Tanzania Wed, 27 Jun 2012 13:34:45 +0000 Luke Browne 5709589 at Malawi suspends anti-gay laws ahead of decision on whether to repeal legislation Justice Minister Ralph Kasambara said he wanted to encourage Malawians to freely debate the issue.
Africa Gay rights Malawi Mon, 05 Nov 2012 12:41:00 +0000 Erin Conway-Smith 5724921 at Malawi's Joyce Banda to auction presidential jet to cut costs The jet was purchased by her predecessor, the late Bingu wa Mutharika, five years ago for $13.3 million.
Africa Malawi World Leaders Want to Know Tue, 29 Jan 2013 23:03:03 +0000 Jill Langlois 5741294 at The curious case of the death of Malawi’s president
JOHANNESBURG — In what’s being called a coup attempt, supporters pretended Malawi’s former president was alive for days last year, even flying him to a South African hospital as his body decomposed.

Africa Malawi World Leaders Want to Know South Africa Wed, 20 Mar 2013 10:01:39 +0000 Erin Conway-Smith 5788045 at
