Israeli army denies vehicle destroyed by Syrian fire

Israel's army and Syrian forces exchanged fire across the sensitive ceasefire line on the Golan Heights on Tuesday, but the Jewish state denied one of its vehicles had been destroyed. The Syrian army "fired on an Israeli patrol, which we confirmed six hours ago, but did not destroy a vehicle or kill anyone," Israeli military spokesman Avichai Adraee wrote on Twitter. Syria claimed to have destroyed an Israeli military vehicle it said had crossed the ceasefire line in the Golan Heights during the incident.

Israel warns Syria of 'consequences' if Golan fire continues

The head of Israel's armed forces warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday of "consequences" if fire continues from Syrian territory against Israeli troops in the occupied Golan Heights. "If he disturbs the Golan Heights, he will have to bear the consequences," Lieutenant General Benny Gantz said in an address at Haifa University broadcast on Israeli television. "We cannot and shall not allow the Golan Heights to become a comfort zone for Assad," he said.

Israeli soldiers patrolling the disputed Golan Heights along the border with Syria fired back after coming under fire overnight, an Israeli Defense Forces statement said Tuesday. "Overnight, shots were fired at an IDF patrol on the border in the central Golan Heights, damaging a military vehicle," said a statement on the army's website. No one had been wounded, it added. "In response, IDF forces returned precise fire at the source of the gunfire. They reported a direct hit," the statement added.

EU denies labelling of settler goods delayed

The European Union on Monday denied an Israeli media report that it was delaying labelling of products from Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. Haaretz newspaper reported on Sunday that the EU had delayed labelling the products to end of June at the request of the United States. "Contrary to what was recently reported in the Israeli media, work on the effective enforcement of EU legislation with regard to the labelling of settlement products has not been delayed. Nor has the EU been asked to postpone such work," a statement said.

Israel backs Kerry peace moves despite internal debate

Israel's centre-right government will support US efforts to revive peace talks with the Palestinians, despite hardline positions held by ministers and coalition parties, a prominent MP said on Monday. "If (Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu goes on the path that US Secretary of State Kerry is encouraging... he will have the full support of... the majority of the parliament," Ofer Shelah, a member of the powerful Yesh Atid party told army radio.

3 more peacekeepers briefly abducted in Golan Heights

Attackers briefly abducted three more UN peacekeepers in the Golan Heights, heightening tensions in the ceasefire zone feeling increasing fallout from Syria's civil war, a UN official said Thursday. At least one of the three officers from the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) seized at an observation post in the early hours of Wednesday was from New Zealand, according to New Zealand media.

Syria projectiles hit Israel-occupied Hermon

Two projectiles fired from Syria hit Israeli-occupied Mount Hermon on Wednesday morning without causing damage or injuries, an Israeli army spokeswoman told AFP. "There were two explosions on the Israeli side of the Hermon, we are examining the incident," she said. "We believe this was a result of the domestic situation in Syria." The popular site on the Israeli-occupied Golan was initially closed for visitors, but it reopened later in the day, the spokeswoman said, adding that Israel had informed the United Nations force in the region about the incident.

US is warned of Russia arms sale to Syria

Israel has warned the United States that Russia plans to sell sophisticated missile systems to Syria that would complicate any foreign intervention there, the Wall Street Journal reported. The Journal reported late Wednesday that Israel had provided information to Washington about the imminent sale to Syria of Russian S-300 missile batteries, advanced ground-to-air weapons that can take out aircraft or guided missiles.
