Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley was left out of Sunday's game at Tottenham after being pictured laying in a pile of £50 notes on a casino floor. A photo of the former Manchester United full-back covered in the wad of notes was published in The People newspaper on Sunday. It was reported the image was taken during a night out to celebrate Wigan's defeat at Arsenal on Tuesday night, a result which secured the Sunderland's Premier League survival.

Manchester City defender Gael Clichy signed a new four-year contract with the Premier League club on Sunday. Clichy has been one of the few solid performers for City during a troubled campaign that will end with the club trophyless and managerless. Wigan will soon be back in the Premier League despite having suffered relegation this season after eight years in the top flight, manager Roberto Martinez said. The Latics dropped back into the Championship on Tuesday night after a 4-1 thumping at Arsenal, just four days after a historic first ever FA Cup triumph. "It's been a tough lesson of what football is all about - real highs and real lows. In our case it was a real contrast - as high as you can get and as low as you can get," said Martinez.

Football: Notts County coaches quit in racist storm

Notts County, one of the very few clubs in the English Football League to employ a black manager, are at the centre of a racism storm, the Daily Mirror reported on Saturday. County, managed by former Ipswich Town, Arsenal and QPR striker Chris Kiwomya, have parted company with two youth team coaches accused of racist behaviour towards trainees at the club. Brett Adams and Lee Broster both resigned after a club hearing on Friday, the Mirror said. Both were accused of racially abusing black youngsters at the training ground.

English football will witness the end of an era on Sunday when Alex Ferguson takes charge of Manchester United for the 1,500th and final time in their last game of the season at West Bromwich Albion. Having waved goodbye to Old Trafford in an emotional 2-1 win over Swansea City last weekend, Ferguson will close the door on his managerial career at The Hawthorns -- 26 years, six months and 11 days since his first game at the United helm, a 2-0 loss at Oxford United on November 8, 1986.
