Football: Hyypia to take sole charge of Leverkusen

Ex-Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia will be the head coach next season when Bayer Leverkusen make their return to the Champions League after Wednesday's announcement that his former co-trainer Sascha Lewandowski will be in charge of the club's youth team. The 39-year-old Hyypia, who made more than 300 Premier League appearances for Liverpool between 1999 and 2009 before finishing his career at Leverkusen, had been co-trainer at Bayer along with Lewandowski, 41, this season, but will take sole charge next term.

Football: Retiring Carragher reveals title regret

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher admits his only regret as he prepares to retire is the club's failure to win the Premier League during his 16-year spell with the Reds. Carragher, 35, will say farewell to Liverpool on Sunday when he plays the 737th and final match of his career against QPR at Anfield. Maracana Stadium 'belongs to the people'

Football legend Pele on Wednesday waded into a bitter debate about the future of Brazil's Maracana stadium, saying the famous venue should not be privatised. Asked on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival what he thought of plans to sell the concession to operate Maracana, Pele said: "I don't agree." "The stadium belongs to the people, the Brazilian people," he told AFP. Pele was speaking during a promotional push for a planned movie about his life, intended for release in time for the 2014 World Cup.

InterMedia raises offer for Outdoor Channel as bidding war heats up

(Reuters) - Leo Hindery's InterMedia Outdoors Holdings raised its offer for cable network Outdoor Channel Holdings Inc for the second time to $9.75 per share, a day after Outdoor Channel agreed to a $9.35 offer by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment LLC. The cable network's shares rose 5.7 percent to $10 on the Nasdaq on Friday.

Football: Whelan won't force Martinez to stay at Wigan

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan admits he won't force Roberto Martinez to stay with the FA Cup winners as they prepare for life outside the Premier League. Martinez's side were relegated on Tuesday after losing 4-1 to Arsenal and the Latics manager refused to commit his future to the club in the immediate aftermath of the Emirates Stadium defeat. Football: Schaaf quits Bremen after 14 years as coach

Werder Bremen on Wednesday parted company with Thomas Schaaf, one of the longest serving coaches in Bundesliga history, after 14 years in charge with the north German side. Bremen had only narrowly avoided relegation this season. Having joined Werder in 1972 as a youth player, Schaaf had spent more than 40 years at Bremen as a defender, then youth team, reserve team and assistant trainer before taking over as head coach in 1999.

Football: QPR star Remy arrested on suspicion of rape

QPR's France striker Loic Remy has been arrested on suspicion of rape, according to police on Wednesday. Remy, 26, is being held by Scotland Yard's sex crime squad along with two other men after a 34-year-old woman alleged three men raped her on May 6 in west London. A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "Officers from Sapphire are investigating an allegation of rape which happened on 6 May in the west London area.

Football: Singapore names German to head national team

Singapore on Wednesday named Bernd Stange of Germany as head coach of the national team, replacing Serbian Radojko Avramovic, who led the city-state to three Southeast Asian championships. Sixty-five-year-old Stange's career includes leading Belarus during the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying campaign where they defeated France in an away qualifier. Under his watch, Belarus saw victory over the Netherlands and draws against traditional football powerhouses Germany and Argentina. The country saw its FIFA ranking rise to 36 in 2011, from 90th place in 2008.
