Facebook made its debut on the stock market a year ago on May 18 in one of the largest IPOs in history and the biggest for any Internet company. The social network's market value was more than $100 billion. Now, Facebook's stock is trading roughly 30 per cent lower and has not hit its IPO price of $38 per share. Today, Facebook is valued at around $63 billion.

Arab League to hold emergency Syria meeting

An Arab League committee on Syria will hold an emergency meeting on Thursday ahead of an international peace conference on ending the country's civil war, the bloc's deputy leader said on Sunday. The foreign ministers of Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Oman, Qatar and Sudan would discuss a US-Russian push for a conference aimed at finding a political solution to the Syria conflict, Ahmed Ben-Hilli told reporters. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates would also join the meeting "to follow up on developments in Syria in light of the US-Russian understanding," he said.

Russia retrieves mice, newts from space

A Russian capsule filled with 45 mice and 15 newts along with other small animals returned from a month's mission in orbit on Sunday with data scientists hope will pave the way for a manned flight to Mars. Russian Mission Control said the Bion-M craft landed softly with the help of a special parachute system in the Orenburg Region about 1,200 kilometres (750 miles) southeast of Moscow. The capsule was also carrying snails and gerbils as well as some plants and microflora. Rossiya state television said not all the animals survived but provided no other details.

Football: Clichy signs new deal with City

Manchester City defender Gael Clichy signed a new four-year contract with the Premier League club on Sunday. Clichy has been one of the few solid performers for City during a troubled campaign that will end with the club trophyless and managerless. The France left-back's reward is an improved deal which will keep him at Eastlands until 2017. "I'm really happy to have agreed a new deal with City and I'm already looking forward to next season," Clichy told City's website.

Harper government buying ads to promote job grant program that doesn't yet exist

OTTAWA - The Harper government is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars advertising a program that does not yet exist. Prime-time ads began airing this week during NHL playoff games — currently the priciest advertising real estate on the dial — that tout a new federal Canada Jobs Grant for training workers. The trouble is, the freshly announced program is at present little more than a concept that has yet to be negotiated with provincial governments, and requires buy-in from employers as well.

Pakistan and China to sign MOUs on development of strategic Gwadar port

The Foreign Ministry in Islamabad said Sunday that Pakistan and China will sign several memorandums of understanding during Chinese Premier Li Keqiang's visit to Pakistan, starting Wednesday. Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani said as many as 12 MOUs will be signed, including three linked to the development of the strategic Gwadar port on the Arabian Sea, which China has been managing since February.

Chinese Premier Li embarks on 4-nation tour

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang left Beijing on Sunday for a four-nation tour that will take him to India, Pakistan, Switzerland and Germany, China's Xinhua News Agency reported. Li is expected to arrive in New Delhi late Sunday afternoon and will meet with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the evening. According to the Chinese government, Li's choice of India for his first trip abroad since taking office in March shows Beijing's determination to strengthen relations with New Delhi.

IAEA inspector backs pumping Fukushima groundwater into sea

A possible solution to the increasing amount of contaminated water inside the crisis-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant could be to pump groundwater into the sea before it gets into the reactor buildings, as planned by the plant operator, the head of international inspectors has said.

Support for Abe Cabinet edges down to 70.9%: Kyodo poll

Support for the Cabinet of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has edged down but remains high at 70.9 percent, compared with 72.1 percent in the previous poll last month, a Kyodo News survey showed Sunday. It was the fourth time that the Cabinet approval rating has topped 70 percent in the monthly surveys since Abe's Liberal Democratic Party came to power in December. The disapproval rating, meanwhile, stood at 16.2 percent, up 0.2 percentage point from the previous survey conducted on April 20 and 21.

US lottery winner scoops $590.5-million jackpot

One ticket-holder won a record Powerball lottery jackpot of more than $590 million, organizers said Sunday, ending a days-long American quest for a life-changing payout. The winning numbers -- 10, 13, 14, 22, 52 and a Powerball of 11 -- were drawn just before 11:00 pm eastern time (0300 GMT Sunday) and the winning ticket was sold in Florida, according to the competition's website. US media quoted lottery officials as putting the winning purse at $590.5 million. Powerball did not name the winner but said further details would be released later Sunday.
