Japan hailed the move as it had been asking the United States to lift a ban on LNG exports to meet its energy needs after most of its nuclear reactors were suspended following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster as well as rising prices of energy imports.

Singapore cost of living sees pawnshops thrive

Singaporean housewife Siti Khadijah Abdul Rahman accumulated a few thousand dollars' worth of gold accessories over the past two decades, but now a rising cost of living is forcing her to pawn them. With a stretched household budget that must also cater to school expenses for her two teenage children, the 49 year-old is pawning her gold to relieve pressure on her security guard husband, who earns Sg$1,500 ($1,211) a month. "Pawning is better than going to friends or family when you have budget problems," said Abdul Rahman. "When I have money, I will claim it back."

The arrest of three Indian cricketers for spot-fixing has prompted new fears over the growing influence of betting mafias on the game in the subcontinent and despair about the "cancer" of corruption. Police behind the arrests say the trio were acting under orders from crime syndicates whose bosses are based in the Gulf but are well aware of the rewards if they can manipulate events on the field throughout the cricket-mad region.

His tattoos include a swastika and Hitler's face on his chest, and the text "Death of the Jews" across his stomach. "A manager offered the fighter as suitable for our gala night based on his sports performance and statistics," the organisers said on the event's website.

Ford told reporters the claim is "ridiculous" while his lawyer has called media descriptions of the video "false and defamatory." "How can you indicate what the person is actually doing or smoking?" Ford's lawyer Dennis Morris demanded, according to the Toronto Star.

US removes Iraqi bank from Iran sanctions list

The United States on Friday removed sanctions on an Iraqi bank that was blacklisted last year for helping Iran skirt international financial controls over its nuclear activities. The US Treasury said it removed the sanctions placed last July on Baghdad-based Elaf Islamic Bank after Elaf acted to freeze assets of the Export Development Bank of Iran and cut its exposure to Iran's financial system. The sanctions, part of the US effort to isolate Iran from the global economy over its alleged nuclear weapons program, had banned Elaf from any access to the US financial system.
