US sergeant accused of secretly filming cadets

A sergeant at the US West Point military academy has been accused of secretly filming female cadets without their consent, including when they were in the shower, officials said Wednesday. The allegations at the prestigious institution mark the latest embarrassment for a force dogged by sexual assault and harassment cases. Sergeant First Class Michael McClendon has been charged under the military's legal code with indecent acts, dereliction of duty, cruelty and maltreatment and acts harmful to good order and discipline, according to a US Army statement.

Canadian father of 'hatchet hitchhiker' stands by son in NJ homicide case

NEWARK, N.J. - He was a gregarious, spontaneous child, his father said, a handful at times who loved music and playing the guitar. As an adult he became famous as Kai, the hatchet-wielding hitchhiker, his celebrity taking a turn toward notoriety when he was arrested in Philadelphia last week and charged with killing a New Jersey lawyer. Caleb McGillivary, his real name, claimed that he was "home free" rather than homeless, a traveller by choice with roots in Sophia, W.Va.

Ryan Gosling misses premiere of new movie at Cannes

Star Ryan Gosling on Wednesday stayed away from the Cannes premiere of his latest film, the ultra-violent "Only God Forgives", a blood-spattered revenge tale set in Bangkok. Boos rang out after a press screening of the movie in which Kristin Scott Thomas also stars as a cross between "Lady Macbeth and Donatella Versace", but some critics later praised the film. "Drive" director Nicolas Winding Refn's film left many in the auditorium wincing or unable to watch, although some lines sparked unintended laughter.

Golf: Rain dampens debut of LPGA Bahamas event

The LPGA's first official tournament in the Bahamas boasts an elite field, but Mother Nature has already thrown a wet blanket over this week's event. The $1.3 million tournament was scheduled to run from Thursday through Sunday, but has been shortened to 54 holes and is now to start on Friday after nearly a foot of rain fell on the Ocean Club Golf Course on Tuesday night. In the wake of violent storms, significant amounts of standing water remained on at least seven holes with the ninth and 18th fairways completely flooded, the LPGA said on its website.

Indie rockers Vampire Weekend top Billboard album chart

"Modern Vampires of the City" sold 134,000 copies in its first week, according to figures compiled by Nielsen SoundScan, and became the second album to debut at the top of the weekly Billboard 200 for the New York-based rockers.

Man murdered in London in suspected Islamist terror attack

A man believed to be a serving British soldier was brutally murdered Wednesday near a London barracks in what Prime Minister David Cameron said appeared to be a terrorist attack. Cameron called the attack "appalling" and said: "There are strong indications that it is a terrorist incident." Armed police shot and wounded the two suspected attackers. One broadcaster showed footage of one of the men at the scene carrying a blood-covered knife and meat cleaver saying to the camera: "We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you."

Russian punk band member starts hunger strike to protest court ruling

This weekly ranking will be updated every Monday and available as a free widget, with rankings for all of the 28 countries where Spotify is available.  In the US, "Can't Hold Us" by Ryan Lewis and Macklemore tops the Spotify 50, while in the UK Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" is in the lead.
