Mexico City, May 21 (EFE).- President Enrique Peña Nieto unveiled the National Development Plan, calling the project a "roadmap" that will allow Mexico's people and government to work "together toward a new stage in the country." "Mexico has a historic opportunity to undertake a deep transformation" with the participation of all sectors of society, the president said.

Nigeria president calls 'state of emergency' in three states

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday imposed a "state of emergency" in three states menaced by Islamist group Boko Haram, saying the level of violence called for "extraordinary measures". The insurgents, who say they are fighting to create an Islamic state in the north, have carried out scores of attacks since 2009 but Jonathan said the violence can no longer be treated as "militancy or criminality".

President vows wide reforms for financially-hit Cyprus

Italian lawmakers again fail to elect president

Italian lawmakers on Saturday again failed to elect a new president for the country in their fifth round of voting, with the largest share of ballots left blank in a stalling tactic by parties. No candidate won a majority of votes in the joint session of parliament, with the highest number -- 210 ballots -- going to Stefano Rodota, a respected academic and human rights advocate. A majority of 504 is required to get elected. A second round of voting will be held in parliament later on Saturday starting at 1330 GMT.
