Quake measuring 5.7 strikes off northwest Turkish coast

ISTANBUL, Jan 8 (Reuters) - An earthquake of 5.7 magnitude struck just off Turkey's northwestern Aegean coast on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. The quake struck 59 miles (95 km) southwest of the Turkish city of Canakkale at a depth of 6.1 miles (10 km) and was felt in Istanbul to the east and Athens in the west. Europe shares briefly slip on France rating cut talk

PARIS, Jan 8 (Reuters) - European shares briefly slipped after fresh market talk of a potential credit rating downgrade of France, before rising again after a senior French official denied the rumour. At 1418 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was up 0.12 percent at 1,162.94 points, after turning almost flat when the rumour surfaced.

Soccer-Struggling Brondby to cut wages by 25 percent

COPENHAGEN, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Brondby have announced that wages at the Copenhagen club are to be cut by 25 percent across the board. "We hope and believe that all employees will agree to this as it is the key to securing the short and long-term capital and liquidity and the continuation of the club," chief executive Tommy Hakansson said in a statement. An initial 10 percent wage cut is to be implemented immediately with a further 15 percent coming in three months.

Congo rebels declare unilateral ceasefire before peace talks

KAMPALA, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Congolese rebels declared a unilateral ceasefire ahead of a second round of peace talks with the government, a rebel spokesman said on Tuesday. The rebel March 23 Movement (M23) has questioned the commitment of President Joseph Kabila's government to the peace process. Efforts last month to end the nine-month rebellion in Democratic Republic of Congo's volatile east failed.

Indian soldier "mutilated" after gunfight with Pakistan troops-Indian general

NEW DELHI, Jan 8 (Reuters) - The body of an Indian soldier was found mutilated on Tuesday after a gunfight with Pakistani troops on the Indian side of the Line of Control that divides Kashmir, a senior Indian army spokesman told local television. "What we have come to know is one body has been mutilated. That is what we are aware of," General S.L. Narasimhan told Times Now.

Qatar says boosting aid to Egypt by extra $2.5 bln

CAIRO, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Qatar said on Tuesday it would lend Egypt's government an additional $2 billion and grant it an extra $500 million outright, extending a lifeline as the government battles to contain a currency crisis. Political strife has triggered a rush to convert Egyptian pounds to dollars over the past several weeks, sending the currency to a record low against the dollar.
