'Man of Steel' soars with $116.6M opening at weekend box office

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - "Man of Steel" went up, up and away at the box office. The Warner Bros. superhero film earned $116.6 million in its opening weekend. The retelling of Superman's backstory nabbed the record for biggest all-time opening in June and is the second biggest opening of the year behind "Iron Man 3," which is on the verge of cracking $400 million at the box office in North America.

Foreign investors bought $14.9B in Canadian securities in April: StatsCan

OTTAWA - Statistics Canada says non-resident investors acquired $14.9 billion of Canadian securities in April, adding both debt and equity securities to their holdings. The agency says Canadian investors added $2.8 billion of foreign securities, a third straight month of acquisitions. It says foreign investment in Canadian securities was led by debt instruments, mainly reflecting private corporate bonds and the first acquisition of money market instruments in 2013.

Scammers fleece Australians out of $90 mln

Australians were fleeced out of more than Aus$93 million (US$90 million) last year by scammers, and officials Monday said they believe it was just the tip of the iceberg. The money people lost was up nine percent on the previous year with a big jump in online shopping scams, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said in a new report. The biggest fraud was people being asked to pay to access a share in a sum of money they are told they are owed, with gullible Australians handing over more than Aus$30 million.

1st qtr U.S. current account deficit expands 3.7% to $106.15 bil.

The United States posted a current account deficit of $106.15 billion for the January-March quarter, up 3.7 percent from the previous three-month period and the first increase in four quarters, due mainly to a sharp fall in the income surplus, Commerce Department data showed Friday.

Nasdaq paying $10M to settle charges over disruption of Facebook IPO; biggest for an exchange

WASHINGTON - Nasdaq has agreed to pay a $10 million penalty to settle federal civil charges after regulators said its systems and decisions disrupted Facebook's public stock offering last year. The Securities and Exchange Commission said Wednesday that the penalty is the largest ever imposed against an exchange. Nasdaq also has had to pay $62 million in reimbursements to investment firms that lost money because of the problems.

Oil prices end week on high note

World oil prices finished on a high note on geopolitical worries in Syria, having begun the week on the back foot following news of strong OPEC oil output, US shale production forecasts and Chinese demand fears. Other commodities were dented somewhat by weak Chinese data and after the World Bank slashed its growth forecast for China's economy this year to 7.7 percent from 8.4 percent. Markets were also roiled by fears of central banks pulling the plug on their extraordinary stimulus measures that are aimed at supporting global economic growth.

U.S. budget gap widens slightly in May to $139 billion

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government posted a budget deficit of $139 billion in May, 11 percent higher than a year ago and above economists' expectations, partly because of temporary calendar adjustments. May has had a deficit for 54 out of the last 59 years, a Treasury official said, as it is typically the month when the government refunds tax payments to U.S. citizens.

Low interest rate a challenge for insurers: US Treasury

Sustained low interest rates by the US Federal Reserve could affect the profitability of the American insurance sector, a report by the US Treasury Department said Wednesday. In 2012, as it continued to crawl out from the financial crisis, the life and health insurance sector posted a record net premiums of $645 billion, and property-casualty insurance firms counted $460 billion in new premiums, according to the report.
