Seven killed in floods, mudslides in Sri Lanka

At least seven people have been killed and two are missing in floods and mudslides following heavy rain across Sri Lanka, the disaster management centre said Wednesday. A tropical cyclone east of the island did not make landfall but caused unusually heavy rain in the past two days which triggered flash floods, the Disaster Management Centre said. Five of the dead drowned in flooding while two were buried in mudslides. Some 13 people have been injured while another 115,000 have been forced to flee flooded homes.

Aso vows support for Sri Lanka's efforts to improve coast guard

Japan's Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso pledged Thursday that Tokyo will support Sri Lanka's efforts to improve its coast guard as the South Asian country sits in a geopolitically important area, Japanese officials said. During a meeting with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Colombo, Aso, who doubles as finance minister, also called for promoting national reconciliation in the country, where a civil war had lasted for an extended period until 2009, the officials said.

NDP campaign to pressure government to boycott Commonwealth summit in Sri Lanka

OTTAWA - The NDP is putting pressure on the Harper government to boycott this year's Commonwealth summit in Sri Lanka as a protest against the country's human rights record. The Opposition says if the Sri Lankan government doesn't agree to an independent, international investigation into alleged war crimes there, Canada should refuse to attend the Colombo summit. MPs Paul Dewar and Rathika Sitsabaiesan say Canada has to take a principled stand on the issue. They are asking Canadians to sign an online position urging a boycott.

US 'extremely concerned' on Sri Lanka press freedom

The United States said Monday it was "extremely concerned" about media freedom in Sri Lanka after gunmen attacked and torched the office of an opposition newspaper of the Tamil minority. State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell, pointing out that the attack was the latest against the island's media, said: "We remain extremely concerned about threats to freedom of expression in Sri Lanka." "We urge the Sri Lankan authorities to protect freedom of expression, to conduct a credible investigation and to hold perpetrators accountable," Ventrell told reporters.

Police start tracking tourists in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's police have begun keeping track of foreign tourists to "ensure their own safety", officials announced on Monday. Hotels and guest houses have been told to submit weekly reports of their foreign guests as part of a new security plan for tourists, police spokesman Buddhika Siriwardena said. "Tourists are important to our economy. This is to ensure their own safety," Siriwardena told AFP. "This scheme will ensure officers will have details of tourists in their areas to protect them."

US warns Sri Lanka of return to conflict

The United States has warned that Sri Lanka could face a return to conflict unless it probes war crimes allegedly committed by its troops and addresses the grievances of its minority Tamil population. Ambassador Michele Sison said Monday night that "important steps in achieving real reconciliation" had not even begun since Colombo declared an end to decades of separatist war in May 2009.

Sri Lanka auctions airwaves for 4G mobile network

Sri Lanka auctioned a block of airwaves to become the first country in South Asia to roll out a full nationwide mobile fourth-generation (4G) network, a top official said Friday. Anusha Palpita, the Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, said he allocated the airwaves to Sri Lanka’s largest cellular operator Dialog Axiata for $26.25 million on Thursday.
