Syrian opposition, government preparing for peace talks-mediator

CAIRO (Reuters) - Syria's opposition and government are preparing to take part in an internationally-sponsored peace conference, the United Nations-Arab League mediator Lakhdar Brahimi said on Tuesday. "The Syrian people are building great hopes on the conference, as the opposition prepares itself to take part and likewise the Syrian regime prepares to take part in this conference," he told reporters at the Arab League. "The United Nations is working to organize the conference in the best way possible."

U.S. envoy on N. Korean human rights cancels visit to S. Korea, Japan

U.S. special envoy on North Korean human rights issues Robert King has canceled his visit to South Korea and Japan that was planned to commence last weekend, a State Department spokesman said Monday. Patrick Ventrell told a press briefing that King "regretfully had to cancel his planned travel and speaking engagements to Seoul and Tokyo," adding it was a "logistical matter having to do with flights."

Syria says destroys Israeli vehicle on its territory

By Dominic Evans BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria said its troops destroyed an Israeli vehicle that crossed into its territory from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Tuesday and warned that any attempt to violate its sovereignty would meet "immediate and firm retaliation". Israel said the incident took place on its side of Golan ceasefire line and the vehicle was damaged but not destroyed, and none of its soldiers was hurt. It said its troops returned fire.

Saudi arrests 10 suspected Iran spies

Saudi authorities have arrested 10 alleged members of an Iran-linked spy cell dismantled two months ago, an interior ministry spokesman said on Tuesday. The eight Saudis, a Lebanese and a Turk bring to 28 the number of people arrested in connection with the cell, the spokesman was quoted by the official SPA news agency as saying. However, a Lebanese arrested in March has been released. aa/lyn/al

Japan, Georgia confirm Tokyo's commitment to cooperate with Tbilisi

Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and his Georgian counterpart Maia Panjikidze confirmed on Tuesday Japan's commitment to continuing cooperation with the former Soviet republic through official development assistance, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said. During a meeting in Tokyo, the two ministers also agreed on the importance of cooperating with each other at the United Nations and other international venues, while they briefed each other on their countries' foreign affairs developments.

UNICEF decries 'desperate' situation in Syrian Qusayr

The UN's children's agency warned Tuesday that up to 20,000 civilians, mainly women and children, could be trapped by harsh fighting in the Syrian town of Qusayr. "The situation is desperate," UNICEF spokeswoman Marixie Mercado told reporters in Geneva. Her comments came as the battle for Qusayr, in central Homs province, raged for a third day after President Bashar al-Assad's forces and allies launched an offensive to reclaim the town more than a year after rebels seized it.

Manila protests Chinese intrusions into Philippine waters

The Philippines said Tuesday it has filed an official complaint with the Chinese Embassy in Manila over the intrusion of Chinese vessels into Philippine waters, a spokesman for the Philippines' Department of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday. The complaint was submitted May 10 protesting the presence of a warship and two Chinese maritime surveillance ships near Ayungin, also known as Second Thomas Shoal. Spokesman Raul Hernandez said Chinese fishing vessels "are still there and they go around the place," despite Manila's protests.

Syria names negotiating team for peace talks: sources

PARIS (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has put forward names of five officials from his administration for internationally-sponsored peace talks with the Syrian opposition, European Union diplomatic sources said on Tuesday. The list includes Prime Minister Wael al-Halki and more junior officials. According to a second EU diplomat, Syria's opposition has already rejected some of the officials on the list because of their lack of influence.

Saudi executes 5 Yemenis for murder

Saudi Arabia on Tuesday executed five Yemenis and displayed their bodies in public for killing a national and forming a gang that committed robberies across several towns in the kingdom, the interior ministry said. The ministry later announced, in another statement carried by the official SPA news agency, that a Saudi was also beheaded in the southwestern Assir region for the murder of a fellow citizen. The five were executed in the town of Jizan, also southwest Saudi Arabia.
