Table tennis: Li, Shiwen in final, Chinese men stay on track

Olympic champion Li Xiaoxia knocked off top seed and title-holder Ding Ning in a thrilling contest to reach the final of the World Table Tennis Championships in Paris on Saturday. Third seed Li had reduced Ding to tears after pipping her to the Olympic crown in London last August, and there was more heartbreak for the world number one as Li this time triumphed in the French capital with an exhilarating 8-11, 11-1, 4-11, 13-11, 11-6, 11-8 victory.

A brace of opportunist tries from scrum-half Piet van Zyl set up Central Cheetahs for a brave 27-13 Super 15 win over Queensland Reds Saturday. He struck twice during the first half to leave his team 18-6 ahead at the break and superb defending and some luck kept the rampant Reds at bay during the second half. The first try came on four minutes with Van Zyl charging down a clearance from fellow No 9 Will Genia and evading fly-half Quade Cooper to score in the corner.

Ice hockey: Sweden to playmeet Swiss outsiders in the world final

Hosts Sweden will play surprise package Switzerland in the final of the world ice hockey championships after each sides registered a 3-0 semi-final victory over Finland and the United States respectively. Sweden's Dallas Stars left winger Loui Eriksson scored two goals and an assist, while goalkeeper Jhonas Enroth produced 30 saves in the team's win over Finland. The result kept alive the Swedes' hopes of becoming the first team to win the gold medal on home ice since the former Soviet Union did it in 1986.

Cycling: Nibali extends Giro lead over Evans

Italian Vincenzo Nibali extended his lead over Australia's Cadel Evans as Mauro Santambrogio won a shortened 14th stage of the Giro d'Italia to claim his maiden win on the race Saturday. Nibali, of the Astana team, had launched a decisive attack in the final kilometres and came over the finish line in second place after giving his fellow Italian the nod to take the stage win unhindered. "I can't believe it, I came to the Giro to win a stage and have done it," said Santambrogio, who rides for the modest Vini Fantni team.

Football: Beckham named captain in PSG home farewell

David Beckham, who is to retire from football at the end of the season, was handed the captain's armband for Paris Saint-Germain's last home game of the Ligue 1 season on Saturday. The former England skipper will lead out the French champions to face relegated Brest at the Parc des Princes. The 38-year-old Beckham arrived in Paris on a five-month deal in January going on to become the first Englishman to win league championships in four different countries.

Bayern Munich came from two goals down to seal a 4-3 win at Borussia Moenchengladbach, while their Champions League final opponents, Borussia Dortmund lost 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim on the final day of the Bundesliga on Saturday. Champions Bayern dug deep for their 29th league victory in 34 matches as Franck Ribery scored twice, then set up Arjen Robben for the winner after Gladbach had scored three goals in the opening 10 minutes.

Defending champion and top seed Ding Ning moved into the semi-finals of the World Table Tennis Championships in Paris on Saturday after dispatching North Korea's Ri Myong Sun. Sun, ranked 44th in the world, had dropped just one game through the first four rounds, a run that included a stunning whitewash of Japanese seventh seed Kasumi Ishikawa, but she was unable to slow down Ding as the Chinese star prevailed 11-6, 9-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-6.
