Korean filmmaker-EIFF jury chief

SEOUL, May 22 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's award-winning director Bong Joon-ho will chair the international jury at this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) set to open next month, the event's organizer said. Bong, whose English-language debut, "Snowpiercer," is expected to open later this year, will choose the winner of the best film award in the international feature film competition category as the chief juror, the festival said in a news release posted on its Web site Tuesday. The 67th edition of the festival runs from June 19-30.

SEJONG, May 20 (Yonhap) -- South Korea plans to issue a maximum of 3.61 trillion won (US$3.23 billion) worth of lotteries next year to meet growing demand, the finance ministry said Monday. According to the ministry in charge of lottery polices, the issuance ceiling is up 3.6 percent from 3.49 trillion won set for this year. The ministry expects that the actual sales will amount to 3.31 trillion won next year.

SEOUL, May 20 (Yonhap) -- South Korean rapper Psy has won the award for most viewed online video at the Billboard Music Awards 2013 on Sunday, according to Billboard Magazine's business news Web site. Psy beat global stars Taylor Swift and Carly Rae Jepsen to grab the trophy for "Top Streaming Song" (Video) for his 2012 global hit "Gangnam Style" at the awards ceremony, which aired live Sunday in the United States from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Billboard.biz said.

Korean conductor-Portuguese award

SEOUL, May 20 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean conductor has recently tied for second place at an international conducting competition held in Portugal. Yoon Hyun-jin won the "Finalist Award" along with another finalist at the 2013 International Competition for Young Conductors held on May 15-18 in Lisbon, he told Yonhap News Agency on Monday. The 31-year-old was the only Korean out of the 145 conductors who took part in the competition from 35 countries. The first prize went to Azis Sadikovic from Austria.

Hashimoto clarifies remarks on "comfort women" after flak

Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto on Wednesday sought to clarify his remarks on a system to recruit women into sexual servitude for Japan's soldiers during World War II, saying he personally does not condone the scheme. Two days after he made controversial remarks that the so-called comfort women were "necessary to maintain discipline" in the Japanese military, Hashimoto told reporters he simply stated a fact that people at the time had that kind of view.

NY Times surpasses USA Today as 2nd largest US daily newspaper; Wall St. Journal remains No. 1

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Wall Street Journal remains the top-selling U.S. daily newspaper, but The New York Times has surpassed USA Today for second, thanks to an expansion into digital subscriptions, according to a report released Tuesday by an industry group.

NY Times gains in otherwise grim newspaper sector

The New York Times, boosted by gains in digital readers, rose to the number two spot among US daily newspapers in a sector still struggling with falling print circulation, industry figures showed Tuesday. Overall circulation for 593 US newspapers for the period to March 31 fell 0.7 percent from a year earlier, and Sunday circulation for 519 newspapers surveyed dropped 1.4 percent, according to the Alliance for Audited Media. The industry group, previously known as the Audit Bureau of Circulations, last year revised its reporting to reflect both print and digital readers.
