FM expects 'big leap' in relations with Venezuela

SEOUL, June 19 (Yonhap) -- Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se voiced hope on Wednesday that South Korea and Venezuela will make a "big leap" forward in their bilateral relations with new governments launched in both nations early this year. Yun made the remarks during a meeting in Seoul with Venezuela's Deputy Foreign Minister David Velasquez, who is on a four-day visit to South Korea to discuss ways to expand economic exchanges and cooperation.

N. Korea to import 100,000 smartphones from China this year

SEOUL, June 18 (Yonhap) -- North Korea plans to import about 100,000 smartphones from China this year, a report said Tuesday. China is planning to export a total of 500,000 mobile phones to the North and 100,000 of them will be smartphones, the Washington-based Radio Free Asia report said, referring to a Chinese government official's posting on Weibo, a Chinese microblogging website.

SEOUL, June 17 (Yonhap) -- South Korea held the world's seventh-largest entertainment and media market last year on the back of rising demand for services on mobile devices, a global consulting firm said Monday. According to the data by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the volume of South Korea's entertainment market came in at US$45.1 billion last year, accounting for 2.8 percent of the global market whose value stood at $1.6 trillion.

S. Korean economy to grow 2.8 pct in 2013: IBs

SEOUL, June 10 (Yonhap) -- Global investment banks (IBs) have forecast the export-reliant South Korean economy to edge up 2.8 percent in 2013 amid the sluggish recovery posted by major countries, a report showed Monday. According to the report by the Korea Center for International Finance, 10 major global IBs maintained their on-year economic growth outlook on the Asia's fourth-largest economy in June from a month earlier.

SEOUL, June 7 (Yonhap) -- The video for South Korean rapper Psy's new single "Gentleman" has drawn more than 400 million views on YouTube, the global video-sharing website said Friday. The video recorded 402.1 million hits as of 11 a.m., jumping to 16th place on YouTube's all-time list of most-viewed videos. The milestone was reached 55 days after its release on April 13 and 29 days after the video broke the 300 million mark on May 9.

Prosecution tracing CJ's accounts at foreign institutions

SEOUL, May 31 (Yonhap) -- Prosecutors investigating CJ Group's alleged slush fund and tax evasion are looking into suspicions that the conglomerate holds borrowed-name accounts at foreign financial institutions here for money transfers and stock trading, prosecution officials said Friday. S. Koreans' overseas card spending falls in Q1

SEOUL, May 31 (Yonhap) -- South Koreans' overseas credit card spending declined in the first quarter from a record high tallied in the previous quarter as the sheer volume of spending per person fell, the central bank said Friday. Overseas credit card bills totaled US$2.48 billion in the January-March period, down 1.2 percent from three months earlier, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK). In the fourth quarter of last year, overseas card spending amounted to a record $2.52 billion, it added.

Readers of German mass daily Bild to pay for some online content

BERLIN (Reuters) - Readers of Germany's best-selling daily, Bild, will have to pay for some online content from mid-June, an executive at Axel Springer said on Monday, as the company fights against an era of "free beer for everyone". Bild's website will adopt a so-called "freemium model", with some content remaining free while items such as exclusive interviews, stories and photos will be subject to a charge.
