Expectations for Obama launch of trade talks during European visit hitting snag

WASHINGTON - One of the big goals of President Barack Obama's upcoming trip to Europe may be in jeopardy with French objections threatening to hold up the launch of negotiations on a sweeping U.S.-European Union free trade pact. The proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership has raised great expectations of boosting growth and jobs by eliminating tariffs and other barriers that have long plagued economic relations. It would create a common market with common standards and regulations across countries that account for nearly half the global economy.

North American free trade agreement with Europe needed, says ex-Mexican diplomat

MONTREAL - Canadian and U.S. efforts to strike free trade deals with Europe must eventually be harmonized into a North American agreement involving Mexico, a former Mexican diplomat said Wednesday. "I know this creates a lot of heartburn in...Washington, but eventually that has to be the step forward," Arturo Sarukhan told an economic conference in Montreal. The former ambassador to the United States said that a continental trade deal is needed to synchronize rules between the European Union and the NAFTA countries — Canada, United States and Mexico.

Poorest WTO members win new patent-rule waiver

The globe's poorest nations have won an eight-year extension of a waiver on intellectual property rules, but still need to hold talks on the vexed issue of pharmaceutical patents, World Trade Organization officials said Tuesday. A session of the 159-nation WTO's TRIPS Council -- standing for trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights -- ruled that the waiver for 34 countries can now run until July 1, 2021.
