US jobless claims at four-month high, cast shadow over labor market

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose to its highest level in four months last week, suggesting the labor market recovery lost some steam in March. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 28,000 to a seasonally adjusted 385,000, the highest level since November, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Oil prices mixed in Asia ahead of US jobs data

Oil prices were mixed in Asia on Friday as traders waited cautiously for the release of US jobs data for March later in the day, analysts said. New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate light sweet crude for delivery in May, shed 13 cents to $93.13 a barrel while Brent North Sea crude for May increased seven cents to $106.41 in the afternoon. Oil prices had fallen in New York on Thursday in the wake of unexpectedly high US jobless claims and concerns about a supply glut in the world's largest economy and energy consumer.

Initial jobless claims, an indicator of the pace of layoffs in the US economy, totaled 385,000 in the week ending March 30, up 28,000 from the prior week's unrevised reading of 357,000, the Labor Department reported. The four-week moving claims average rose by 11,250 to 354,250. The third straight weekly increase was unexpected and brought claims to their highest level since late November.

In its 2013 policy plan reported to President Park Geun-hye, the Ministry of Employment and Labor said it will create an average of 476,000 new jobs annually, totaling 2.38 million in five years. The country's employment rate, which measures the number of employed people as a proportion of the population aged 15 or older, stood at 57.2 percent last month, according to government statistics.

New claims for US unemployment benefits fell last week for the third week in a row, signaling continuing improvement in the troubled jobs market, Labor Department data released Thursday showed. Jobless claims, an indicator of the pace of layoffs across the country, totaled 332,000 in the week ending March 9, a drop of 10,000 from the prior week's revised number, the department said. Last week's reading was the lowest since January 19, when jobless claims hit a five-year low. The decline surprised analysts who on average expected claims to rise to 350,000.
