New claims for US unemployment benefits fell last week as the jobs market slowly improves, government data released Thursday showed.
Initial jobless claims, an indicator of the pace of layoffs, fell by 6,000 to 331,000 in the week ending August 24, the Labor Department reported.
The prior week's number was revised upward by 1,000 to 337,000.
The latest figure was in line with analysts' consensus estimate of 330,000.
Claims have been trending lower in recent months and were hovering at nearly six-year lows of around 330,000.
