U.S. OKs liquefied natural gas exports to Japan, others

The United States said Friday it will allow exports of domestically produced liquefied natural gas to Japan and other countries to which it is not bound by free trade agreements, authorizing a plan to deliver shale and other gases from Texas. Japan hailed the move as it had been asking the United States to lift a ban on LNG exports to meet its energy needs after most of its nuclear reactors were suspended following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster as well as rising prices of energy imports.

Nursing home company Extendicare to divide U.S. and Canadian businesses

MARKHAM, Ont. - Shares in Extendicare Inc. (TSX:EXE) shot higher Thursday after it announced plans to separate its Canadian and U.S. businesses due to the complexity of operating on both sides of the border and the changing nature of the operations. The stock gained 95 cents to close up 16 per cent at $6.88 on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The company said the U.S. and Canadian health care businesses are expected to become more different over time with regulatory reform in the U.S. and the related federal and state spending cuts.

Japan, U.S. conclude 1st dialogue on cyber defense cooperation

Japan and the United States concluded their first comprehensive dialogue on cyber defense on Friday after exploring new areas of cooperation, they said in a joint statement. During the two-day meeting in Tokyo, Japanese and U.S. officials also identified actions that governments and private-sector entities can take to secure critical infrastructure, and affirmed the application of "norms of responsible state behavior" in cyberspace, according to the statement.

Bipartisan immigration legislation emerging in the Senate could prevent hundreds of thousands of immigrants in the U.S. illegally from ever becoming citizens, according to a Senate aide with knowledge of the proposals. The bill expected to be unveiled next week would bar anyone who arrived in the U.S. after Dec. 31, 2011, from applying for legal status and ultimately citizenship, according to the aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the proposals had not been announced. It also would require applicants to document that they were in America before Dec.

Kremlin warns US against publishing Russia blacklist

The Kremlin warned Washington on Friday against publishing a list of Russian officials barred from entering the United States because of their alleged abuse of human rights. Russian media reports said the dozens of names included on the so-called "Magnitsky Act" -- named after Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky who died in prison after revealing a suspected state embezzlement scheme -- would be published in the United States later on Friday.
