SEOUL, May 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korea is seeking to resume talks on a free trade deal with Russia as part of efforts to expand its economic cooperation with the country, the government said Tuesday. Free trade agreement (FTA) talks with Russia came to a halt in 2008 when Russia suspended negotiations unilaterally.

Russia foils terror attack on Moscow

Russian security services said Monday they had foiled a terror attack on Moscow, killing two of the plotters and arresting another. "Our forceful actions prevented an attempted act of terror in the capital," the National Anti-Terror Committee said in a statement. The statement said the men, all three of them ethnic Russians, were detected on the outskirts of Moscow. A gunfight erupted during their attempted arrest which left a Russian federal security official lightly injured.

Depardieu to open restaurant in Russian city where he lives

Moscow, May 20 (EFE).- French actor Gerard Depardieu, a Russian citizen since early this year, is soon to open a restaurant in the city where he now resides, authorities in the Mordovia region said Monday. "Depardieu told us that he will soon open a restaurant that aims to attract creative, enterprising people," Valeri Maresiev, information minister for the Russian Republic of Mordovia, told the Interfax news agency.

The chief executive of French banking giant Societe Generale's Russian unit was detained in Moscow on Wednesday on suspicion of seeking a $1.5-million bribe and accepting a smaller kickback. Putin says sees 'no elements of Stalinism' in Russia

President Vladimir Putin on Thursday denied the existence of any elements of Stalinism under his rule but warned there needed to be "order and discipline" in modern Russia. "I do not see any elements of Stalinism here," Putin said in his annual question-and-answer session with Russians amid growing criticism from activists over a crackdown on civil society. "Stalinism is linked to the cult of personality, mass violations of the law, repressions and camps." But he added: "This does not mean that we should not have order and discipline."
