LATAM airlines first quarter profit down almost half from year ago to $42.7 million

SANTIAGO, Chile - LATAM Airlines Group's first quarter net profit has dropped by nearly half from the same period last year on lower cargo revenue and sudden changes in foreign exchange. LATAM was created when Chile's LAN took over Brazil's TAM last year. The carrier reported Tuesday a net income of $42.7 million compared to a pro forma consolidated — or simulated net income for both carriers — of $83.7 million a year ago. That represents a 48.9 per cent drop.

More than 1 in 5 US flights arrived late in March as airlines' on-time performance worsens

WASHINGTON - The Transportation Department says fewer flights arrived on time and more were cancelled in March than a year ago. On the other hand, fewer passengers are lodging formal complaints against the airlines. The government said Wednesday that 79.8 per cent of flights arrived within 14 minutes of schedule in March. That's down from 82.2 per cent in March 2012. Hawaiian Airlines and Virgin America had the best on-time ratings, while regional carrier ExpressJet and JetBlue Airways had the worst.

BYD's electric taxis hit Hong Kong roads with big ambitions

Air India may sell eight of its Boeing 777 aircraft: chairman

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - State-run Air India <AIN.UL> is open to selling all eight of its Boeing 777 200-LR passenger aircraft, Chairman Rohit Nandan said, and the debt-ridden carrier is seeking Boeing's <BA.N> help in talks with potential buyers. Air India will replace the routes flown by the aircraft with high-tech 787 Dreamliner jets initially, he said. Southwest first to order Boeing's smallest 737 MAX

Southwest Airlines on Wednesday became the first airline to order Boeing's new 737 MAX 7 airplane, the smallest model of the new fuel-efficient MAX family, the companies announced. The Dallas, Texas-based carrier changed its existing order for 30 Boeing Next-Generation 737s to 30 737 MAX 7s, they said in a statement. The first delivery is set for 2019. The 737 MAX is a re-engined version of the single-aisle 737, the best-selling plane in aviation history.

Investigators seek cause of deadly limousine fire in California

(Reuters) - Investigators on Monday were seeking the cause of a fire that engulfed a stretch limousine, killing five passengers and injuring four other people, as the vehicle was traveling across a bridge in the San Francisco area over the weekend. All the victims were nurses, out celebrating with bride Neriza Fojas, who was among those killed, according to local media.

Southwest Airlines boosts dividend, delays delivery of planes to cut short-term spending

DALLAS - Southwest Airlines Co. is delaying delivery of new airplanes and filling the gap with used planes to reduce spending over the next five years. It's also raising its dividend and could soon buy back more of its own shares. Southwest said Wednesday that it will delay 30 firm orders for Boeing 737 jets, which CEO Gary Kelly said would cut capital spending through 2018 by more than $500 million. The airline is also giving up or delaying options for additional planes.

Interjet to run direct flights between Mexico, Puerto Rico

San Juan, May 15 (EFE).- Mexican budget airline Interjet has begun flying a route between that country and Puerto Rico, ending a more than 13-year drought without a direct flight between the two territories, the executive director of the Puerto Rico Ports Authority said.
