Many new-car dealers not using voluntary fuel-efficiency labels: report

OTTAWA - A growing number of Canada's car dealers are removing fuel-efficiency labels that the industry agreed to display on each vehicle under a voluntary deal reached with Ottawa 15 years ago. A survey of almost 600 dealerships across the country found that the labels were attached to only 63 per cent of the new vehicles on outdoor lots. And vehicles displayed in dealer showrooms had the labels affixed just 43 per cent of the time. Some high-end models — BMW and Rolls-Royce, for example — had a zero compliance rate.

Hong Kong launches first electric taxis

Hong Kong saw its first electric taxis hit the streets on Saturday in a step towards reducing the city's high levels of roadside pollution. The 45 bright red cars were launched by Chinese electric vehicle producer BYD, which is partly backed by US investment titan Warren Buffett. Called the BYD e6, the five-door crossover sedans are powered by iron phosphate batteries and take two hours to charge, a statement from BYD said, adding that they can then travel for 300 kilometres (more than 180 miles).

LAN airlines suspends domestic, international flights in Argentina over dispute

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Hundreds of passengers remained stranded at Argentina's airports on Friday after LAN Airlines S.A. temporarily suspended all domestic and international flights over a dispute with a state-owned company that is the country's sole handler of passenger luggage. The local branch of LATAM Airlines Group said all its flights in Argentina are suspended at least until Saturday because Intercargo refuses to transfer passengers on buses to and from airplanes, clean the planes and unload cargo and luggage.

Halifax Regional Council signs deal to buy New Flyer clean diesel buses

WINNIPEG - New Flyer Industries Inc. (TSX:NFI) said Friday that Halifax Regional Council has approved the purchase of up to 80 of its Xcelsior clean diesel 40-foot heavy-duty buses. The contract includes a firm order of 22 buses with options to purchase an additional 58. Financial terms were not immediately available. Production of the buses is expected to be start in the third quarter and be completed by the end of the year. New Flyer builds heavy-duty transit buses in Canada and the United States.

General Motors stock rises above $33 initial public offering price for first time in 2 years

DETROIT - Shares of General Motors reached an important milestone on Friday, closing above their initial public offering price of $33 for the first time in more than two years. GM shares reached $33.77 Friday before slipping back to close at $33.42, up 3.2 per cent. The auto giant sold shares to the public for $33 in a November 2010 IPO, but they've traded below that price since May 4, 2011.
