SEJONG, June 19 (Yonhap) -- South Korea agreed to share its experience from its own economic development campaign named the Saemaul Movement with Myanmar as part of efforts to expand bilateral cooperation, the finance ministry said Wednesday. The agreement was made between South Korea's Finance Minister Hyun Oh-seok and his Myanmar counterpart during their first economic cooperation joint committee meeting held in Myanmar's capital city of Naypyidaw.

International book fair opens in Seoul

Korean schools abroad to accept non-Korean students

SEOUL, June 19 (Yonhap) -- South Korea is pushing for overseas Korean schools to admit non-Korean students as part of efforts to nurture talents well-versed in Korean culture and boost the competitiveness of the schools, the education ministry said Wednesday. Under a revised bill submitted to the National Assembly, schools reserved for Korean nationals and compatriots in foreign countries can fill up to 30 percent of their total enrollment with non-Korean students.

U.S.-China-S. Korea talks not aimed at excluding Japan: Seoul

South Korea does not aim to shut out Japan in pushing for a trilateral strategic dialogue with the United States and China on issues related to North Korea, South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung Se said Tuesday. Speaking at the National Assembly's foreign policy committee, Yun said there are already diplomatic forums involving Japan, South Korea and the United States, and South Korea has already briefed the Japanese government on the proposed U.S.-China-South Korea strategic dialogue.

S. Korea invites N. Korea to take part in 2014 Asian Games

South Korea has invited North Korea to attend next year's Asian Games to be held in the western port city of Incheon, Yonhap News Agency reported Tuesday. Park Jong Gil, the second vice minister of culture, sports and tourism, said the invitation was sent to North Korea about two months ago but Pyongyang has yet to respond, according to Yonhap. "I expect to hear good news from Pyongyang soon," Park was quoted as saying. The 2014 Asian Games is scheduled to open Sept. 19 and run for 16 days.

South Korea opens bidding for $7.3 billion purchase of new fighter jets

SEOUL, South Korea - South Korea has begun accepting bids from aircraft makers to supply 60 new fighter jets at an estimated cost of $7.3 billion (8.3 trillion won). Two arms procurement officials said the bidding began Tuesday and is scheduled to end next week. Boeing's F-15 Silent Eagle, EADS' Eurofighter Typhoon and Lockheed Martin's F-35 Joint Strike Fighter are competing. The deal would be South Korea's biggest arms purchase ever. The 60 fighter jets will replace the country's aging fleet of F-4s and F-5s.

Ban arrives in China for high-level talks: spokesman

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for high-level talks with Chinese officials on North Korea, Syria and other issues, his spokesman said. Ban will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and senior foreign policy officials during his stay, spokesman Martin Nesirky said. Ban "expects to discuss a wide range of matters pertaining to peace and security, such as the situation on the Korean Peninsula, Mali and Syria," Nesirky said in an e-mail to AFP.

S. Korea to host int'l forum during World Heritage Committee meeting in Cambodia

By Shim Sun-ah SEOUL, June 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will host an international forum during the annual meeting of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) that is currently underway in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, officials said Tuesday. The forum scheduled for Wednesday will explore new official development assistance approaches to world heritage conservation, Seoul's Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) said. It will be part of the 37th session of the WHC that opened Sunday for a 12-day run. South Korea sent a delegation led by Byun Young-sup, head of the CHA, to the session.
