Japan, Singapore agree to strengthen economy, security cooperation

Japanese and Singaporean leaders agreed Wednesday to strengthen cooperation in the economy and security, while confirming plans to further promote trade and investment under a bilateral free trade agreement, the Foreign Ministry said. During a meeting in Tokyo, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe asked for Singapore's continuing cooperation in the Pacific-rim free trade talks Japan is set to join, with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong welcoming Tokyo's participation in the talks for the U.S.-led Trans-Pacific Partnership, in which Singapore is also involved.

European leaders hold summit on tax evasion

Brussels, May 22 (EFE).- The heads of state and government of the European Union are holding a summit Wednesday in an effort to make more progress in fighting tax evasion and tax fraud. EU leaders are targeting tax crimes both within the borders of their countries and in foreign tax havens despite the reluctance of Austria and Luxembourg. The leaders of the EU's 27 member states are expected to give the go ahead to the European Commission to negotiate new agreements with Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco and San Marino to expand exchanges of bank informaiton.

Harper test-drives new 'extractive industries' approach to aid in Peru

LIMA, Peru - The Senate expenses scandal is turning Prime Minister Stephen Harper's visit to South America into an awkward communications exercise. Harper's officials have indicated that the prime minister will finally take questions early this afternoon on the Prime Minister's Office involvement in reimbursing Senator Mike Duffy $90,000 for improper housing expense claims But Harper will be next to Peruvian President Ollanta Humala Tasso in a joint presentation that was supposed to be about boosting the mining sector to aid development in Peru.

Mixed feelings for Eritreans 20 years on

While 20 years ago Eritreans danced to celebrate their newly gained independence, on May 24 this year few have much to smile about other than fond memories of happier times. SEOUL, May 22 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will seek to rebuild trust with North Korea by offering humanitarian aid to Pyongyang if inter-Korean dialogue is reopened, a top security official said, despite months of high tensions triggered by the North's nuclear test. Ju Chul-ki, the senior presidential secretary for foreign affairs and national security, told senior diplomats on Tuesday that Seoul is willing to "present several proposals to North Korea if (inter-Korean) dialogue resumes."

World Bank boosts funds for Syria refugees, Africa

Japan, Georgia confirm Tokyo's commitment to cooperate with Tbilisi

Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and his Georgian counterpart Maia Panjikidze confirmed on Tuesday Japan's commitment to continuing cooperation with the former Soviet republic through official development assistance, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said. During a meeting in Tokyo, the two ministers also agreed on the importance of cooperating with each other at the United Nations and other international venues, while they briefed each other on their countries' foreign affairs developments.
