Real Madrid official sees bright future for S. Korean football

Emilio Butragueno, the director of institutional relations for Real Madrid, is visiting South Korea this week to promote Real Madrid's work with youth players. The Real Madrid Foundation opened its youth academy in South Korea earlier this year and currently has three coaches from the Real Madrid system.

Rival parties voice caution over N.K. dialogue offer

SEOUL, June 17 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's rival political parties expressed caution Monday over North Korea's recent proposal for high-level talks with the United States, saying the South should not be left out of the picture. The North's proposal came Sunday, five days after its planned high-level talks with Seoul broke down due to a dispute over the rank of the chief delegate from each side. Pyongyang proposed the two sides discuss security and nuclear issues. However, Washington urged the communist nation to first live up to its denuclearization commitments.

The move comes as North Korea issued a surprise proposal for talks with the U.S. on Sunday, after months of raising tensions on the Korean Peninsula following its third nuclear test early this year.

Japanese companies raided over alleged used-tire exports to N. Korea

Police on Monday searched the head offices of a used-tire exporter in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, and a trading company in Fukuoka on suspicion of illegally exporting used tires to North Korea, according to investigative sources. A joint Hokkaido-Fukuoka investigation team suspects that the companies sent used tires to North Korea via Dalian, China, without approval from the Japanese trade minister. The names of the companies were not immediately known.

China and North Korea to hold talks this week

China will hold talks with North Korea this week, Beijing said Monday, amid ongoing tensions on the Korean peninsula over the North's nuclear programme. Chinese vice foreign minister Zhang Yesui will meet North Korean first vice foreign minister Kim Gye-Kwan in Beijing on Wednesday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular briefing.

N. Korea should aim at denuclearization with sincerity: Suga

A day after North Korea called for unconditional high-level dialogue with the United States, the Japanese government's top spokesman said Pyongyang should first show a willingness to discuss denuclearization. "We do not speculate what North Korea's intentions are but any dialogue should lead to denuclearization, and North Korea should first show its sincere attitude toward denuclearization," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said during a press conference on Monday.

S. Korea, China inks pact on joint filmmaking

Economic forum for Korean-Chinese business leaders opens in Seoul

SEOUL, June 17 (Yonhap) -- Business leaders from South Korea and China came together Monday for a special forum aimed at establishing a network of cooperation between the two countries. Hosted by the World Federation of Overseas Korean Traders Association (World OKTA), the two-day Korea-China Economic Forum drew about 200 people from both countries, including Korean-Chinese and Korean business leaders in China.

US says N. Korea talks must be 'real'

The United States will only engage in "real" talks with North Korea and will judge actions, not Pyongyang's "nice words" about wanting high-level negotiations, a senior US official said Sunday.
