SEOUL, May 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korea is seeking to resume talks on a free trade deal with Russia as part of efforts to expand its economic cooperation with the country, the government said Tuesday. Free trade agreement (FTA) talks with Russia came to a halt in 2008 when Russia suspended negotiations unilaterally.

North Korea releases detained Chinese fishing boat, owner says

BEIJING (Reuters) - North Korea released a Chinese fishing boat on Tuesday after it was taken from waters between the two countries, the boat's owner said, in an incident that had proved a new irritant in ties between the often uneasy allies. Chinese counselor to North Korea Jiang Yaxian had told state media earlier that North Korea had "grabbed" the private vessel from off the northern city of Dalian in waters between China and the Korean peninsula.

Bolivian senator with asylum in embassy asks Brazil high court for help

Brasilia, May 20 (EFE).- Bolivian opposition Sen. Roger Pinto, who has been taking refuge in the Brazilian Embassy in La Paz for almost a year, has asked the Brazilian Supreme Court to intercede on his behalf, the court reported Monday. Pinto asked the high court to urge the Brazilian government to seek a solution to his problem, whether it be through an agreement with Bolivia or by providing the means for him to leave the country, according to a court statement.

Bolivia leader to meet Carter over land dispute with Chile

President Evo Morales planned to meet ex-US president Jimmy Carter in the US state of Georgia on Monday to discuss Bolivia's longstanding territorial dispute with Chile, officials said. Last month landlocked Bolivia sued neighboring Chile in the Hague, in the latest maneuver in its attempt to recover land lost in a 19th century war and thus regain access to the Pacific.

SEOUL, May 20 (Yonhao) -- North Korea asked South Korea Monday to clarify its stance on the future of a suspended joint industrial complex in its territory and state whether it is willing to address "fundamental issues" that have caused the trouble. In response, South Korea said the latest North Korean demand did not reflect reality, calling on the communist country to accept its demand for official working-level dialogue to resolve the dispute.

Japan explains to S. Korea about envoy's visit to N. Korea

Japan has explained to South Korea about the results of a recent visit to North Korea by an adviser to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, South Korea's Foreign Ministry spokesman said Monday. "The Japanese side has offered an explanation through a diplomatic channel," spokesman Cho Tai Young said. Cho declined to go into details about the results of the trip, saying it will be "appropriate" for the Japanese side to offer an explanation to the media.

SEOUL, May 20 (Yonhap) -- The government said Monday it is checking each of the 123 South Korean companies for damage assessment of their withdrawal from an inter-Korean joint industrial complex in North Korea in April. The Unification Ministry, which handles cross-border affairs with North Korea, said four teams, made up of officials from various government agencies, are visiting those affected companies to keep them informed of the latest developments and assess their damages.

US envoy-canceled visit

Multiple sources said King, who had been scheduled to arrive in Seoul on Sunday, has abruptly called off his trip without giving a reason.

Kaesong firms-compensation bill

SEOUL, May 19 (Yonhap) -- The country's largest law firm is preparing to draft legislation aimed at compensating companies that have taken a hit from the suspension of an inter-Korean industrial complex in North Korea, a law firm official said Sunday. The factory complex in the North's border city of Kaesong has remained idle since early April as Pyongyang pulled all its workers from 123 South Korean companies there, citing South Korea's provocations.
