Li, the second seed, got the news from her coach that French opponent Marion Bartoli, the 2011 Eastbourne winner and Wimbledon finalist in 2007, would not be playing their second-round match due to a viral infection. Former French Open and US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova has withdrawn from Wimbledon because of an abdominal strain, the All England Club announced on Wednesday. Kuznetsova, a quarter-finalist in 2003, 2005, 2007, was to have been the 26th seed at the tournament, which starts on Monday. But the 27-year-old Russian's withdrawal means that Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic becomes the 32nd seed to fill the gap. Tennis: Nadal seeded five at Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal was named fifth seed for Wimbledon on Wednesday, leaving his major title rivals to ponder meeting the 2008 and 2010 champion as early as the quarter-finals. Nadal, the holder of 12 Grand Slam titles, and fresh from his record-breaking eighth French Open triumph in Paris, was seeded behind compatriot David Ferrer who takes the fourth seeding. Venus Williams pulls out of Wimbledon

LONDON (Reuters) - American Venus Williams has pulled out of this year's Wimbledon because of a back injury, the five-times singles champion said on Tuesday. The 33-year-old has not played since pulling out of the doubles at this year's French Open. "I will not be able to participate in Wimbledon," Williams wrote on her Facebook page. "I am extremely disappointed as I have always loved The Championships."

Tennis: Ferrer loses title in shock first-round exit

Spaniard David Ferrer failed to get back on the winning track on his return after losing in the French Open final as he lost his 's-Hertogenbosch ATP title on Tuesday, going down 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 to veteran Belgian Xavier Malisse in the first round. Ferrer, who lost in straight sets to compatriot Rafael Nadal in the final at Roland Garros 10 days ago, admitted that he had not had the best training for the match as he had practised on hard courts last week back in Spain.

Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams has pulled out of this year's tournament because of an ongoing lower back injury. Williams suffered her earliest French Open exit in 12 years when she crashed to a first-round defeat to Poland's Urszula Radwanska at Roland Garros last month. The 33-year-old - who has won seven Grand Slam titles in all - also pulled out of the doubles there with her sister Serena because of her back problem. "Unfortunately, I will not be able to participate in Wimbledon this year," Williams said on her Facebook page.

But not everything went to plan for the elite, with top seed Agnieszka Radwanska losing to American qualifier Jamie Hampton 7-6 (7/2), 6-2. It was the second straight year that the Pole, 2012 Wimbleodn finalist, had exited in the opening round.
