Rome, May 17 (EFE).- Czech Tomas Berdych pulled off a shocking comeback Friday against world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the Rome Masters, turning what seemed a certain lopsided loss into a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 win. Djokovic, who cruised through his first two matches of the tournament and led Berdych 6-2, 5-2, saw the momentum of the match change in an instant against his big-hitting opponent. The Serbian broke Berdych's serve in the fourth game of the match en route to an easy first set victory.

Big-serving Czech Tomas Berdych caused the first major upset of the Rome Masters on Friday when he ousted world number one and top seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia. Berdych, who had beaten Djokovic only once in their last 14 meetings, prevailed 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 to book himself an unlikely place in the semi-finals and boost his chances ahead of the French Open. Berdych's serve and his combinations of shots had Djokovic in trouble from the middle of the second set, when he launched his fightbck.

Russia's Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the Rome Open, citing "physical problems", the WTA said on Friday. The two-time winner of the tournament and world number two had been due to play Italy's Sara Errani in the quarter-finals. Sharapova, the defending champion, posted a message on her Twitter account explaining the reason for her withdrawal. "I'm sorry for having to withdraw from the tournament this morning. Didn't recover after being sick last week and it got me again last night," Sharapova said.

Ailing Maria Sharapova said the thought of not recovering in time for the French Open had prompted her to pull out of the Rome Open before her quarter-final match on Friday. However the Russian announced her withdrawal on Friday morning citing sickness and claiming she had run a temperature overnight.

Nadal survives Gulbis onslaught to reach Rome quarters

Rome, May 16 (EFE).- Spain's Rafael Nadal withstood a barrage of aces and winners from Ernests Gulbis and came back from a disastrous first set Thursday at the Rome Masters to pull out a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory and advance to the quarterfinals. A free-swinging Gulbis raced off to a 5-0 lead before Nadal finally held serve to get himself on the scoreboard. In the second set, Nadal went up a service break before squandering it, although he was able to break Gulbis' serve a second time to avoid a tiebreaker and even the match.
