However the Russian announced her withdrawal on Friday morning citing sickness and claiming she had run a temperature overnight.

Nadal survives Gulbis onslaught to reach Rome quarters

Rome, May 16 (EFE).- Spain's Rafael Nadal withstood a barrage of aces and winners from Ernests Gulbis and came back from a disastrous first set Thursday at the Rome Masters to pull out a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory and advance to the quarterfinals. A free-swinging Gulbis raced off to a 5-0 lead before Nadal finally held serve to get himself on the scoreboard. In the second set, Nadal went up a service break before squandering it, although he was able to break Gulbis' serve a second time to avoid a tiebreaker and even the match.

Tennis: Nadal survives Gulbis test as Djokovic, Serena win

Defending champion Rafael Nadal endured a three-set thriller before overcoming big-hitting Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 on Thursday to reach the Rome Masters quarter-finals. Gulbis, ranked 46th, and a winner in Rome in 2010 over Roger Federer on his way to the semi-finals, saved two match points in the third set, but finally went down when he sent a forehand wide to the massive relief of a dancing, celebrating Nadal. The Spaniard now stands 6-0 against Gulbis as he bids for a seventh Rome title.

Djokovic cruises into Rome quarters

Rome, May 16 (EFE).- Serbia's Novak Djokovic breezed into the quarterfinals of the Rome Masters on Thursday with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov. Djokovic's return of Dolgopolov's first serve was the difference, as the Ukrainian only managed to win 53 percent of those points en route to surrendering his serve on three occasions. The Serbian world No. 1, meanwhile, staved off all three break points he faced and won 72 percent of his service points.

Tennis: Djokovic into quarters, feels for injured Murray

Top seed Novak Djokovic played without ankle pain Thursday in a routine 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Alexandr Dolgopolov for a quarter-final place at the Rome Masters, and then spared a thought for the injury plight of rival Andy Murray. Djokovic dispatched Dolgopolov in an hour, with five aces and 13 winners in a contest which began 45 minutes late due to morning rain. The two-time Rome champion will play Czech Tomas Berdych, a winner over South Africa's Kevin Anderson 7-5, 6-2, in the last eight.
