Nadal charges into Rome Masters 3rd round

Rome, May 15 (EFE).- Spain's Rafael Nadal opened the defense of his Rome Masters title with a comfortable 6-1, 6-3 second-round victory Wednesday over Fabio Fognini. The first-ever meeting between the two players was almost entirely void of drama, as Nadal broke the Italian's serve in the opening game and dictated play from the baseline throughout the contest.

World number two Andy Murray admitted Wednesday that he could miss the French Open after a long-term back injury forced him to quit the Rome Masters. "I'd be very surprised if I was playing in Paris," a subdued Murray said after retiring from a second-round start at the Foro Italico, handing a 6-3, 6-7 (5/7) win to Spain's Marcel Granollers. Murray, who was celebrating his 26th birthday on Wednesday, said that pain in his lower left back, which has bothered him since late 2011, has been flaring recently, bringing on the Rome pullout.

Andy Murray pulled out of the Rome Masters on his 26th birthday on Wednesday as the Scot succumbed to back and hip pain during a second-round clash with Marcel Granollers. Having lost the first set 6-3, the third seed fought back from 4-1 down in the second set to win a tie-break. But after levelling the match on his second set point, he promptly went to the net to shake hands. Murray, ranked world number two behind Novak Djokovic, had been seen by the trainer for on-court hip and back treatment after the third game of the second set.

The world No. 2, who turned 26 on Wednesday, began suffering back problems in the second set and called for the trainer while trailing 3-6, 1-2. Murray proceeded to lose the next two games and was a point away from a 5-1 deficit before storming back and forcing a tiebreaker, which he won 7-5.

Two-tme Rome masters champion Novak Djokovic began his campaign for a hat-trick trophy with a 70-minute, 6-2, 6-3 win over Albert Montanes which was wrapped up with an ace. The Serb was all smiles as he got the job done in his second-round start after a bye after losing a week ago in his opening match in Madrid to Grigor Dimitrov. The Bulgarian threat was knocked out earlier by French ninth seed Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-4.

Briton Laura Robson beat Venus Williams 6-3, 6-2 in blustery conditions at the ATP/WTA Rome Masters on Monday and now faces the second half of a one-two punch when she next plays Williams' sister and world number one, Serena. The top-seeded American, who was watching from the stands, has targeted this week and hopes to follow up her Madrid trophy from the weekend. "I've never played her and I have always wanted to,"Robson said of her Serena date.

Tennis: Sharapova ready to end Serena hoodoo

Maria Sharapova believes she is ready to end her hoodoo against world number one Serena Williams when they meet in the Madrid Open final on Sunday. Sharapova, who surged into her first final in Madrid with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ana Ivanovic on Saturday, hasn't beaten Williams since 2004, losing 11 straight matches against the 15-time Grand Slam champion in that period. However, with the number one ranking also for the taking should the Russian manage to win, she has taken encouragement from their last meeting in Miami earlier this year when Sharapova took the opening set.

Tennis: Serena, Sharapova ease into quarters

World No.1 Serena Williams cruised into the Madrid Open quarter-finals as she dismantled 13th seed Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 6-1 in just an hour and four minutes on Thursday. The American, who is yet to be beaten in eight matches on clay this season, held a perfect 6-0 head-to-head record with the Russian before the match and never looked in danger of extending that streak to seven out of seven. Williams didn't even face a break point during the match as she broke at 3-3 to move ahead and then again in the final game of the first set.
