Nadal beats Wawrinka in Madrid final

Madrid, May 12 (EFE).- Spain's Rafael Nadal defeated Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2, 6-4 Sunday in the final of the Mutua Madrid Open, taking his third title at the Masters 1000 event. The world No. 5 won the 40th clay-court title of his career and tied Swiss great Roger Federer with three titles in Madrid. "Perhaps this victory is special after such a complicated season," Nadal said. The 26-year-old Nadal, an 11-time Grand Slam champion, was off the ATP Tour for seven months due to a serious knee injury.

Rafael Nadal sealed his fifth title in seven tournaments since returning from a seven-month injury layoff as he claimed a third Madrid Masters title with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Stanislas Wawrinka on Sunday. Nadal now has 55 career titles with 40 coming on clay, an astonishing record that prompted Wawrinka to describe the Spaniard as a "killer" on clay courts. Nadal, who holds a 9-0 career record over Switzerland's Wawrinka, rolled through the first set thanks to two early breaks in little over half an hour.

World No.1 Serena Williams cruised into the Madrid Open quarter-finals as she dismantled 13th seed Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 6-1 in just an hour and four minutes on Thursday. Williams didn't even face a break point during the match as she steamrollered the Russian, dropping only one more game from 3-3 in the first set. The second set was straight forward for the 15-time Grand Slam champion as she raced into a 5-0 lead and then served out in style to book her place in the quarters, where she will face Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues.

Serena Williams retained her Madrid Open title on Sunday with a devastating display to beat world number two Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-4. The title is Williams' 50th of her singles career and extends her amazing run over Sharapova who she hasn't lost to in 12 meetings since 2004. "Thank you to everyone, to all my fans and to Maria. I am very happy," Williams said afterwards. Sharapova though was left to reflect on once again coming up short against the world number one. "Thank you to everyone for being so supportive in every single match.

Tennis: Nadal, Serena, Sharapova through, Murray out

Rafael Nadal overcame a stiff test from compatriot David Ferrer to reach the Madrid Masters semi-finals Friday, but there was no such luck for Andy Murray who was beaten 7-6 (7/3), 6-4 by Tomas Berdych. Defeats for Murray and Ferrer mean that the world's top four have all been eliminated following earlier exits for Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. World number five Nadal, who is now the favourite for a third title in the Spanish capital, had to come from a set and a break down to win 4-6, 7-6 (7/3), 6-0 over world number four Ferrer.
