Worker rights issues pose a challenge to Gulf building boom

By Praveen Menon DUBAI (Reuters) - A strike by thousands of migrant workers at Dubai's biggest builder Arabtec last month may be a harbinger of a new wave of industrial activism that threatens to disrupt the Gulf's latest construction boom. Gulf nations have relied heavily on the supply of cheap labor from Asia to build their vast housing and infrastructure needs. But their treatment of foreign workers has been criticized repeatedly by rights groups who have demanded that governments repeal oppressive labor laws.

Philippine economy led by services expands 7.8 per cent in first quarter, highest in years

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine economy expanded 7.8 per cent in the first quarter, the fastest pace since 2010 and outpacing China, led by growth in services and industry. Officials said Thursday that the quarterly growth rate was the highest since reformist President Benigno Aquino III took office in 2010 on a promise to fight corruption and cut poverty. Aquino's allies won majorities in both houses of Congress in elections early this month, making it possible for Aquino to push through with his legislative agenda in the remaining three years in power.

PARIS (Reuters) - Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli did her best to lift the gloom hanging over a rainy Roland Garros on Tuesday after putting herself and the shivering home fans through agonies in a three-hour victory over Olga Govortsova. The 13th seed scraped into the second round, clinching a 7-6(8) 4-6 7-5 win on her fifth match point after producing groans from the Chatrier crowd when she double-faulted on her first.

The London-based rights group said millions of people who have fled conflict or persecution, and migrants who have left home in search of work, have suffered abuses at the hands of state authorities or employers.

Labor, activists call on Obama to halt deportations

Washington, May 13 (EFE).- Organized labor and activist groups asked President Barack Obama on Monday that he halt deportations of undocumented immigrants who would be eligible for legalization under bills pending in Congress. "The deportations must stop, and they must stop right now," Ana Avendaño, spokeswoman on immigration topics for the AFL-CIO, said in a teleconference.

Only immigration reform can stop deportations, lawmaker says

Washington, May 10 (EFE).- President Barack Obama will not put a halt to deportations of undocumented immigrants until and unless Congress passes immigration reform, Rep. Luis Gutierrez told Efe. Obama could not keep his 2008 promise for immigration reform and made it one of the pillars of his second term, but, according to Gutierrez, the immigrant community "is suffering intensely" due to the deportations.
