Football: Inter and Benfica fined for fans' behaviour

Inter Milan and Benfica were hit with fines from UEFA on Friday over the behaviour of their fans and poor organisation during the Europa League last 16 round. Inter were fined 45,000 euros after monkey chants were reported during their clash with Tottenham on March 14. Benfica copped a 32,000-euro fine for the actions of their fans during their game with Bordeaux a week earlier. Inter have already been hit with a fine for racist chanting by their fans during a Serie A clash against neighbours AC Milan earlier this season.

Benfica have also been hit by a 32,000 euro fine for organisational issues and the conduct of their supporters at the Europa League last 16, first leg against Girondins Bordeaux in Lisbon last month.

German-born Ghanaian Kevin-Prince Boateng claimed in a newspaper interview Friday that being targeted with racist abuse from some fans almost prompted his departure from Italy. Boateng, a forward with AC Milan, hit the international headlines in January when he led his team off the pitch during a friendly with third division side Pro Patria after being targeted with racist 'bu-bu' chants from a handful of fans. The incident brought the thorny issue of racism in Italian football grounds back into the spotlight and prompted a number of clubs to declare anti-racism drives.
