Football: Uncertainty overshadows PSG title win

Overwhelming favourites at the campaign's outset, Paris Saint-Germain were eventually able to celebrate winning the Ligue 1 title with two games to spare, but uncertainty surrounding the future takes some of the shine off the capital club's triumph. No other team in France could keep up with a PSG side built thanks to the massive financial power of their Qatari owners, even if Marseille and Lyon provided greater resistance than had been expected.

A first-half winner from Luca Toni secured a precious 1-0 win for Fiorentina over Palermo and relegated the Sicilians from Italy's Serie A on Sunday. Fiorentina's 20th win of the campaign kept them in fourth but boosted their push for a third-place finish which offers Champions League football next season via a preliminary round. Vincenzo Montella's side are now only one point behind third-placed AC Milan, who will look to restore their four-point cushion at home to Roma in Sunday's late match.

Football: Cagliari foil Juventus' record bid

Newly-crowned champions Juventus were foiled in their record-breaking Serie A points bid when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Cagliari on Saturday. Juve secured their 29th league title last weekend but Antonio Conte's side had a new objective: beating the 91 points garnered in 2005/06, when they were stripped of their Serie A title for match-fixing. But that feat has now alluded them with this stalemate in which Victor Ibarbo's 12th minute goal was cancelled out by Juventus' Montenegrin striker Mirko Vucinic just after the hour mark.

Football: Meggiorini escapes sanction over alleged racism

Serie A disciplinary officials said Wednesday Torino midfielder Riccardo Meggiorini would face no sanctions after being accused of racially abusing Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba. The officials said discrepancies in the various accounts of what Meggiorini actually said to Pogba meant they could not be sure any racial abuse had taken place. Pogba claimed he was subjected to a racial insult during the Bianconeri's recent 2-0 win over their city rivals and although Meggiorini later confirmed he had abused the 20-year-old Frenchman, he denied his invective was racist in nature.

Klose, 34, netted five goals in Lazio's 6-0 demolition of Bologna in Serie A on Sunday to signal that he is back to his best after a knee injury meant his last goal for the Rome-based side was back on December 15.

Football: Juve triumph again, but Conte fears for Europe

Juventus cemented a 29th title triumph on Sunday after another near flawless campaign, but for coach Antonio Conte hoisting the club back among the giants of European football will continue to be hampered by a cash-strapped Serie A. It was following Juve's quarter-final humbling by Bayern Munich in Europe's premier club competition last month that Conte lashed out. "In Italy, people are more interested in following futile stories than looking at how we can go about improving the state of our football," he said.
