Russia calls on Syria opposition to back peace conference

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday called on the Syrian opposition to support Moscow and Washington in their efforts to work towards convening a peace conference to end the bloodshed in Syria. "It is important for all participants to express articulate support for the Russian-US initiative to implement the Geneva communique," Lavrov was quoted as saying in the Swedish town of Kiruna by Russian news agencies.

Turkey says energy deal reached with Exxon Mobil for oil exploration in Iraqi Kurdish region

ANKARA, Turkey - Turkey says its state-run petroleum company has reached a deal with U.S. company Exxon Mobil to explore for oil in northern Iraq. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday that the deal was a "step toward exploring for oil" in Iraq's Kurdish region. He said details of the deal would be revealed after his visit to the United States on Thursday.

Death toll from Syria conflict likely as high as 120,000: group

BEIRUT (Reuters) - At least 94,000 people have been killed during Syria's two-year conflict, but the death toll is likely to be as high as 120,000, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Tuesday. More than 94,000 people have been killed in more than two years of conflict in Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in a newly-revised toll on Tuesday. The watchdog group said it revised the toll -- just two days after it announced a tally of 82,257 dead -- after receiving new information from regime-controlled Alawite areas of the Sunni-majority country. "Based on this information, the number of martyrs and dead killed since the beginning of the Syrian revolution is more than 94,000," it said in a statement.

Jordan to host 'Friends of Syria' next week

Jordan's foreign ministry said on Tuesday Amman will host a meeting of the so-called "Friends of Syria" group next week to discuss latest developments in Syria's civil war. "The foreign ministers of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, the United States, Britain, France, Turkey, Germany and Italy will hold a meeting in Amman in mid-next week," ministry spokeswoman Sabah Rafei told AFP.

The Iraqi government said on Tuesday that it rejects the entry of Kurdish fighters from Turkey into its territory as a "flagrant violation" of the country's sovereignty and independence. "The Iraqi government confirms its rejection of the withdrawal and the presence of armed men of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) inside Iraqi territory, which is a flagrant violation of Iraq's sovereignty and independence," a statement from the cabinet said. The first group of PKK fighters, who are departing Turkey as part of a peace drive with Ankara, arrived in north Iraq on Tuesday.

DAMASCUS, Syria - Syria's information minister says Damascus needs more details about a proposed U.S.-Russian initiative before it decides whether to attend. The main opposition group has taken a similar stand. Omran al-Zoubi says in remarks carried by state news agency SANA Tuesday that Syria will not take part in any political dialogue that infringes on the country's sovereignty.

First Kurdish fighters from Turkey arrive in Iraq

The first group of Kurdish fighters leaving Turkey as part of a push for peace with Ankara arrived in the Harur area of Iraqi Kurdistan early Tuesday, an AFP reporter said. "We are the first group to reach the safe area in Iraq," said Jagar, the leader of the group of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) fighters, which comprised nine men and six women. The fighters, who arrived about 6:00 am (0300 GMT) and were armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles, light machineguns and rocket-propelled grenade launchers, were greeted with handshakes and hugs from PKK members based in Iraq.
