The White House will keep pushing for tough gun ownership laws despite little support in Congress, Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday, as fellow Democrats vowed to introduce a bill to halt violence. "I'm not going to rest and nor is the president until we do all of these things," Biden told a press conference in New York with Mayor Michael Bloomberg and bereaved parents from Newtown, where 20 elementary school children were shot dead in December.

New York, Mar 21 (EFE).- U.S. Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday demanded "courage" from Congress in approving gun control measures that would include a ban on assault rifles. He spoke at New York City Hall at a joint press conference with Mayor Michael Bloomberg and relatives of the victims of the Dec. 14 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

U.S. Congress renews Violence Against Women Act

Washington, Feb 28 (EFE).- The U.S. Congress on Thursday approved a new version of the 1994 Violence Against Women Act including protections for same-sex couples and Native Americans who are sexually assaulted by non-Indians. The measure, which was approved by the Senate on Feb. 12, passed in the House of Representatives on Thursday by a vote of 286-138, with many Republicans opposing the bill because of the clauses pertaining to homosexuals. In a statement, President Barack Obama promised to sign the updated VAWA as soon as it reaches his office.
