Ethiopian delegation to arrive in Seoul on inaugural flight

SEOUL, June 17 (Yonhap) -- A group of 150 government officials and business executives from Ethiopia will fly to South Korea this week on board the Ethiopian Airlines' inaugural flight from Addis Ababa to Seoul, officials said Monday. The visit by the Ethiopian delegation, led by the African country's Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom, comes as Ethiopian Airlines will become the first African carrier to operate scheduled flights to Seoul on Tuesday.

Sudan, South Sudan to take steps to lower oil tension

CAIRO (Reuters) - Sudan and South Sudan are prepared to take steps, brokered by the African Union, to try to avert an oil crisis between them amid accusations from both sides that the other is supporting insurgencies in their territories. Sudan officially informed South Sudan on Tuesday that it would stop allowing its neighbor to export crude through its territory within two months unless Juba gave up support for insurgents operating across their shared border.

Al Qaeda group confirms death of Abou Zeid and another leader

NOUAKCHOTT (Reuters) - Al Qaeda's North African wing (AQIM) on Sunday confirmed the death of two of its senior commanders in Mali earlier this year, veteran jihadist Abdelhamid Abou Zeid and brigade commander Abdallah Al Chinguetti, Mauritania's ANI news agency said. The death of Abou Zeid, who made millions of dollars kidnapping Western hostages over the past decade, had already been announced "with certainty" by France in March after clashes with its troops in northern Mali.

Bible-burning Egyptian cleric jailed for 11 years

CAIRO (Reuters) - A Cairo court sentenced an Egyptian Muslim preacher to 11 years in jail for blasphemy on Sunday for burning a Bible during a protest last year outside the U.S. embassy. Convictions for insulting Islam are common in Egypt, ruled by Islamists after the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak in 2011, but more rare for cases involving the minority Christian faith.

Mandela showing 'sustained' improvement

Nelson Mandela is showing a "sustained" improvement after more than a week in hospital battling a lung infection although his condition remains serious, South African President Jacob Zuma said Sunday. "As you are aware, president Nelson Mandela is still in hospital in Pretoria. We are grateful that he continues to get better," Zuma said at a public rally. "Over the last two days, although he remains serious, his doctors have stated that his improvement has been sustained. He continues to engage with family."

Libya PM due in Benghazi after bloody clashes

Libya's premier was due to meet local authorities in Benghazi on Sunday, a government source said, as special forces units patrolled the city a day after clashes with gunmen killed six soldiers. Prime Minister Ali Zeidan was due to travel to the eastern city with members of his government to discuss the security situation, the source said on condition of anonymity. An onlooker in Benghazi told AFP that "special forces soldiers have been deployed in the city and patrolled the streets, which are calm again".

Woman MP to run for Mali president

A female lawmaker will run for president of Mali in elections due to be held in the troubled west African country next month. Aissata Cisse Haidara, 54, threw her hat into the ring on Saturday at a rally attended by several thousand supporters, mainly women and young people. "I am a candidate, not just to make up the numbers but to play a role in the rebuilding of the Mali, which has become an unrecognisable country today," she said.
