U.N. aid chief says Sudanese rebels obstructing aid deal

By Ulf Laessing KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudanese insurgents are obstructing a deal to deliver much-needed aid into areas under their control in two Sudanese states where almost a million people have been forced from their homes, the U.N. aid chief said on Thursday. The United Nations has been trying to get aid into South Kordofan and Blue Nile states, where Sudan's army has been fighting the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-North) for almost two years.

UN calls for 1,100 extra peacekeepers in disputed Abyei

UN leader Ban Ki-moon on Friday called on the UN Security Council to send more than 1,100 extra peacekeepers to the flashpoint region of Abyei disputed by rivals Sudan and South Sudan. The call comes after deadly clashes in the territory between rival groups who Ban said "remain armed, hostile and highly distrustful of each other." Rivalry has regularly turned into battles in Abyei, where sovereignty was never settled after South Sudan broke away from the north in July 2011.

Insurgents kill two rebel chiefs in Sudan's Darfur

Two Darfur rebel chiefs who signed an accord with the Sudanese government have been killed in an insurgent attack near the strife-torn region's border with Chad, the foreign ministry said on Monday. "The forces of the Revolutionary Front carried out an odious terrorist operation on Sunday, murdering in cold blood the two leaders Mohammed Bashar and Arko Dahiya" who "were on a peaceful mission in the Yamna region on the border with Chad," it said in a statement.

A tribal leader was shot dead in the same incident, while in separate violence along the neighbors' volatile border, the Sudanese army clashed with rebels of the SPLM-North, which is trying to topple President Omar Hassan al-Bashir.

Ethiopian peacekeeper killed, two wounded in Sudanese clash

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - One Ethiopian peacekeeper was killed and two others wounded when a U.N. convoy was caught up in a tribal clash in the Abyei border region claimed by both Sudan and South Sudan, the United Nations said on Sunday. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for calm after the Ngok Dinka chief Kual Deng Majok and the peacekeeper died in an "attack" by a Misseriya tribesman in the region on Saturday. "It looks like Dinka are very angry," one local resident told AFP. He reported fire coming from the Abyei town centre, where Misseriya operate small shops.
