Tennis: Aussies, Germany bid to end decades of Fed Cup pain

Australia and Germany aim to end decades of Fed Cup pain when they clash in the semi-finals while Italy and the Czech Republic, the current tournament heavyweights, face off in the other last-four tie. Australia's last final appearance was in 1993 when they lost to Spain while the most recent of their seven titles came way back in 1974 when Evonne Goolagong was in her pomp. Germany haven't won the competition since 1992 when Steffi Graf and Anke Huber starred in the team which defeated Spain.

Tennis: Bouchard holds off Venus in Charleston

Canadian starlet Eugenie Bouchard admitted it was "a bit ugly" as she held off former world number one Venus Williams 7-6 (8/6), 2-6, 6-4 to reach the Family Circle Cup quarter-finals Thursday. Bouchard, an Australian Open semi-finalist who is seeded sixth in the green claycourt WTA premier level event, saved two set points in the first-set tiebreaker, and rallied from a break down in the third to advance to a meeting with second-seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic. Williams followed her younger sister, world number one and top seed Serena, out of the tournament.

Melbourne, Australia, Jan 25 (EFE).- Chinese sporting hero Li Na overcame early jitters to defeat Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 in Saturday night's Australian Open final, a victory that cements her place in tennis history. The late bloomer finally lifted up the trophy at this major hard-court event after losing in the final in 2011 and 2013, finding her game after winning a tight first set to cruise to her second Grand Slam title.

Li hoping for third time lucky at Melbourne Park

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Li Na's memories of her previous Australian Open finals are not fond ones as she prepares for a third at Melbourne Park on Saturday against first-time finalist Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia. In 2011 against Kim Clijsters, she took the first set before the Belgian rallied to clinch her fourth, and final, grand slam title. Last year's final was even worse for the Chinese.
