Asia shares mixed after US data, dollar stumbles

Asian shares were mixed Tuesday, with the dollar's rally against the yen stumbling despite better than expected US retail figures which highlighted a steady recovery in the world's largest economy. Tokyo slipped 0.16 percent, or 23.79 points, to 14,758.42, but Seoul rose 1.03 percent, or 20.13 points, to 1,968.83. Sydney rose 0.21 percent, or 10.7 points, to 5,221 but the Australian dollar traded just below parity with the greenback ahead of the annual budget, which is expected to sketch an austere path back to surplus over the next four years.

Consensus needed on reforms in Spain, business group says

Milan, May 9 (EFE).- The economic and financial reforms implemented to deal with the financial crisis must have the support of "the majority of the political parties" in Spain, Spanish Business Council for Competitiveness, or CEC, executive director Fernando Casado said Thursday. At a time when some sectors and parties are pushing for a national pact in Spain, consensus would make reforms "much more effective," Casado told Efe during the presentation in Milan of the CEC report "Spain: A Land of Opportunities."

'Africa's Davos' to plot continent's rise

The great and good of global commerce descended on Cape Town Wednesday to take part in "Africa's Davos," which hopes to flesh out the promise of a continent-wide economic revolution. More than 1,000 people -- including heads of state, captains of industry and assorted onlookers -- will gather for the World Economic Forum's annual Africa gathering, which runs until Friday. They will discuss a continent long-defined by poverty, disease and war, but one that is expected to grow at more than five percent this year.

Germany sees surge in immigration from crisis-hit Europe

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - An influx of people from crisis-hit southern European countries like Spain, Italy and Greece has led to the biggest surge in German immigration in nearly 20 years. The Federal Statistics Office said 1.081 million immigrants flocked to Germany last year, up 13 percent from 2011 and the highest number since 1995.

Russian helicopter with nine aboard crashes in Siberia

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A helicopter with nine people aboard including Russian Emergency Ministry officials crashed in eastern Siberia on Monday, the ministry said, and Itar-Tass reported it was also carrying two tons of explosives used to blow up ice on frozen rivers. Debris from the Mi-8 helicopter was spotted in Russia's Irkutsk province later in the day. Interfax reported that search and rescue teams had found human remains and that it was unclear whether there were any survivors.

Japanese traders return from holiday in buoyant mood, sending Nikkei up to 5-year highs

LONDON - Japanese stocks outperformed all others Tuesday as traders in the country returned from a public holiday in buoyant mood, sending the Nikkei index above 14,000 for the first time in nearly five years. The Nikkei surged 3.6 per cent to 14,180.24 on its first day of trading following the Golden Week holiday — that's the first time the Nikkei has breached the 14,000 mark since June 2008.

Italy urges fast EU action on youth unemployment

Italy's new premier urged the European Union on Monday to act quickly to tackle the problem of high youth unemployment, calling for it top the agenda at a summit of EU leaders next month. "I think youth unemployment really has to be at the centre of everything. It can't be that political leaders see as normal that one in two, or one in three, European youths don't work," Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta said at a joint news conference with his Spanish counterpart Mariano Rajoy.
