By Lee Chi-dong WASHINGTON, March 28 (Yonhap) -- U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said Thursday that North Korea has become more dangerous today and the U.S. has to be prepared for "any eventuality" on the peninsula. "I think their very provocative actions and belligerent tone has ratcheted up the danger. And we have to understand that reality," he said during a news conference at the Pentagon. He stressed that the U.S. and its allies should take seriously "every provocative, bellicose word and action that this new young leader (Kim Jong-un) has taken so far."

Hagel plans Israel visit to boost defence ties: ministry

US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel plans to visit the Jewish state in April to boost cooperation between the two countries, Israel's defence ministry said on Wednesday. The plans were discussed during a telephone conversation between Hagel and new Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon, who took up the position on Monday, a ministry statement said. "Defence Secretary Hagel congratulated Minister Yaalon on his appointment as defence minister. Minister Yaalon also congratulated Defence Secretary Hagel on his new position, and on his intention to visit Israel next month."

"Minister (Moshe) Yaalon congratulated Defence Secretary Hagel on his appointment and on his intention to visit Israel next month," in a telephone conversation, the ministry said in a statement. The statement quoted Hagel as saying that he "felt high about the security and strategic relations between the two countries" and wanted "strengthening of cooperation between the two defence systems."

Karzai-Hagel press event off due to security fears: US

Afghan President Hamid Karzai Sunday cancelled a high-profile press conference in Kabul with new US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, with US officials saying the event was dropped for "security concerns". A palace official, who declined to be named, said however that the press conference had been cancelled because of "scheduling pressure", without giving further details.
