3 more peacekeepers briefly abducted in Golan Heights

Attackers briefly abducted three more UN peacekeepers in the Golan Heights, heightening tensions in the ceasefire zone feeling increasing fallout from Syria's civil war, a UN official said Thursday. At least one of the three officers from the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) seized at an observation post in the early hours of Wednesday was from New Zealand, according to New Zealand media.

"There were two explosions on the Israeli side of the Hermon, we are examining the incident," she said. "We believe this was a result of the domestic situation in Syria." The spokeswoman said the popular site, which is in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, was closed for visitors, and that Israel had notified the United Nations force in the region about the incident.

Damascus denies responsibility for Turkey bombings

Syrian rebels free Philippine peacekeepers

Syrian rebels Sunday freed four Filipino peacekeepers five days after seizing them at an observation post in the Golan Heights, the Philippine military's chief spokesman said. "They have been released. They are now in the custody of the commander of the Philippine battalion in the Golan Heights," Brigadier General Domingo Tutaan told AFP. The Filipino members of a United Nations peacekeeping force were taken by Syrian rebels on Tuesday in the tense ceasefire zone between Syria and Israel.

Austrian Golan peacekeepers, fearing safety, to assess presence

UN sends extra armored cars to Golan Heights force

The United Nations has sent extra armored personnel carriers and ambulances to its mission in the Golan Heights because of the growing fallout from the Syrian war, a spokeswoman said Wednesday. The announcement of the extra equipment for the force monitoring a ceasefire between Israel and Syria was made as the UN Security Council expressed concern at the growing dangers for the peacekeepers.

Austria says no plans to withdraw from UN force in Golan

Austria said Wednesday it does not plan on withdrawing any forces from the UN peacekeeping mission on the Golan Heights, despite rising concern over troop safety in conflict-torn Syria. "At the moment there are no plans" for any reduction in personnel, a defence ministry spokeswoman told AFP. Austria's stance comes after the United Nations announced Monday it was removing about half of its 100 international staffers in Syria as attacks edged closer to UN buildings.
